I'm back after a long hiatus (retired from the Air Force, moved, started a new, job, worked on some coversions). I have been thinking of doing a winter themed board for a long, long time but lacked the motivation. Until recently, here is Ice Station Zed in the frozen wastes of the polar region of the planet Hovas Secundus. It is actually a subsurface communications relay station/observation post/research lab that can only be accessed through the guarded door to the lower levels. The station has a communications array atop one hab/research dome, while an Icarus Lascannon stands ready to repel any assaults. Both the array and the lascannon can be lowered into the subsurface levels during the frequent wind/ice storms that ravage the area.
Here is what I started with:

Ingredients included: some pink foam, a Cylon basestar model (Hobby Lobby - $13 close out bin), Tropicana orange juice bottle lids, some individual serving size milk jug lids, spackle, gorilla glue, white glue, tops from two round wooden boxes, and a cities of death door.
Here is what they looked like all put together,

A close up of the entrance to the lower levels with the hvy bolter turrets in place. The Tropicana lids are great cause they have a very gothic look to them.

I base coated all "metal" pieces a dark grey/blue while all the ice/snow was painted a lighter blue grey. I worked up thru lighter and lighter shades of light, icy blues, to dirty white to pure white dry bushing each layer until I got the ice world look I was after. Here is the best photo of the final look my camera and light situation allowed. All the other photos are a bit to light to show the actual color variations.

Here is an overhead shot I took when flying in on the Valkyrie resupply ship. A landing pad piece is in the planning stages.

The Icarus Lascannon. Note the snow (baking soda, white glue and white paint) and the cracking ice. As a bonus the spackle was a bit old/dry when applied and when it dried completely I got this cool look.

Defenders of Ice Station Zed come out to greet my Valkyrie on landing.

A small patrol gets ready to move out as I took this final shot of Ice Station Zed taken shortly after lift off for my return to warmer climes.

Let me know what you guys think,
