So, I've noticed that we have a lot of soldiers/former soldiers on this forum, and I thought it would be interesting to share that background.
Personally I was drafted when 17, entered my service when I was 18 and have since then spent all birthday on the training field. My first unit was a rapid response platoon, light infantry.

I failed the physical for the RAF after dislocating my knee playing ice hockey at 18. I'm almost 30 and it still causes me problems now.

Been in the Irish Army Reserve since I was 18. I'm in the Regiment of Leinster and set to be promoted to corporal in the next few weeks.

So has anyone seen much of the world with their military service? Seen as that seems to be quite a popular reason for people to sign up.
For me iv been to: The Falkland Islands (twice, which require four trips to the Ascention Island, but only managed to explore the Island once due to flight delays), Belgium, Denmark, Oman, Cyprus. I also came very close to going to a two way firing range twice, one being Iraq, the other Afganistan. I am glad I didn't go to both places, although I regret not going at the same time.

CCS twice a week usually. You think doing it once a year was a bore. I was on one unit where I had to run 3 courses a week. Now that's boring. Some places it was intermingled with Guard Force training, IRT, Other specialist stuff. Like special weapons training for the nurses from a satelight unit. MAHONEY !!! Still no sex though.
And no, I wasn't one of the shouty types.
Luckily most of my Instructional time was spent on heli sqns What was your trade?

Even being as young and fit as I am I wouldn't consider it an option. The training would break me and I've never laid a finger on anyone in my life.

I was there but long after the Tonkas had gone. Leuchars mainly. Take it you where at Benson?

Aldergrove and Odiham. Only passed through Benson.
I'm actually toying with the idea of joining the reserves. Back into the Regt or as a Paramedic. I'm just sick of being mis-managed by civies with no clue. Not sure how I'll cope with the physical, 48 years old in a young mans game.
Some people have told me that I do 40K as a way of trying to stay on the forces mindset. None of them trained psychologists mind you, but that doesnt mean it isn't true.

I think the problem of being in the forces so long is getting institutionalise. I agree though, working for civvies is as bad as working with civvies! In my experience of the last year and a half anyway (although a lot of ex army there).
RAF reserve is full of old gits anyway so I'm sure you will be fine lol.
If your playing 40k to keep in the military mindset, and If your a computer geek you need to get Wargame: AirLand Battle. Cold War gone wrong based rts.

Institutionalised is an under statement! I'm still doing things now that people I work with don't understand. And why would they, what I'm doing or saying sometimes makes no sense in civi st.
Computer skills? None. Surprised I can actually post on here without any major calamities !!!

I found the 'one in all in' attitude doesn't exist in civvie street, but stabbing in the back is accepted. I also found it pritty hard to stop saying certain things, and I dislike that if someone is pissing you off you can't give them a black eye and just work the weekend as punishment. And things like Naafi rumbles are frowned upon
