Is this a tactic that people use in their battles?
Has anyone any stories?
What is it useful for.
Ramming something with a Chimera in side armour looks like it could be quit handy actually but I am not sure what moving infantry to one side would achieve?

It's most useful when a Unit is right at the edge of an area it needs to be in. Pushing a Unit an inch over to the side so that they're no longer Claiming/Contesting an Objective, for instance. Or pushing a Tyranid Unit out of Synapse so you can break it.
It can also be useful to clump up Enemy Models so you can hit more with Blasts or Templates.

just like in real life tank shocking isn't a tactic any army will rely on to win battles, but more an occasional thing. i've been tank shocked with my space wolves a couple of times so that my opponent could unleash more template weapons on me.

It's hard to do but if you can position yourself well enough (creeeeeeed!)you can tank shock backboard units, the sort of stuff that has long range Dakka, and so sits as far away from you as possible, and they could then run off the board. Either way, you will disrupt them.

I've used it to get through a unit so my devil dog woul be in melta range of a necron barge. I've also used it when my vehicles have suffered crew shaken or weapon destroyed results. However I have also been tank shocked off an objective by a flacon grave tank.

I've used it fend off an impeding En assault which disrupted their attack on my fire support base. Only bought me a few inches but I was then able to engage another unit that he wasn't expecting me to the next turn and he failed his assault distance by 2inches (Mwhahaha)
Captain Zapp Brannigan: Dammit, Kif! Where's the little umbrella? That's what makes it as scotch on the rocks.

I played a game against Tau. I tank shocked with my two basilisks after he deepstiked 6 multi-meltas crisis suits. I was lucky that he rolled all ones on his first attack. I also got very lucky when i tank shocked because he failed leadership with both units and ran of the board.

how did they run of the board? if i recall correctly the failed morale test makes them retreat towards their deploymentzone's board edge?

That is where my basilisks were located. I had to move them to his edge for fear of his original deep strike crisis suits, but he scatted on drop and then ran a full 12 inches. I still lost the game with those being my only two kill points.

It's to scare the enemy, a big tank shooting at you scary, a big tank coming straight at you, holy crap I need to get out of the way!, You can push around enemy units possibly off an objective, away fromva more importa t tank or unit, closer to a unit that is going to kill it, and you can even make some units break and run!,

It's a pretty basic Mechanized Platoon maneuvering tactic; send one or two Chimeras in to tank shock a unit so that they clump up, then send in another to flame 'em. Say what you want about the Multi-laser/Bolter build, but Multi-laser/Flamer is probably more useful if you're being aggressive with your tank column.

It can be very deadly if you back a multinwound character into a corner. I killed an eldar autarch with a tank shock because he couldn't move to get out I the way and failed his death or glory. Also an easy way to take out tyranid mysetic spores especially in purge the alien where they are worth a victory point.

With the Lords of War superheavy tank units in 'Pockylips/Escalation it can be pretty scary. Or at least that's what my impression is from a quick reading of the rules... You actually can inflict multiple wounds, make things go squish, and kill stuff.

Usually when I tank shock, I follow it up with a heckle to my opponent, daring him to Death or Glory. As a result, my command squad's chimera has killed two Bloodthirsters, a Daemon Prince, a Trygon, and an Avatar of Khaine.

I didn't think they could Death or Glory on a tank shock?

If the unit being tank shocked passes their leadership test, they may choose to Death or Glory, or everyone simply just gets out of the way.

I think Howscat's talking about the player, not the unit.

You need to tank shock if you want to hit them with your sword.
