ok so im currently planning my elder army im going to be gradually purchasing.
was going to focus on wraith units.
my quandary is that outside of wriath units I can't decide what to add that keeps with the theme, ill have t use some squishy elder it seems lol
My main quandry is that is it realy worth taking Wraith guard/blades as troops? if I take them as elites I can take 10 x wraithguard 10 x wraith blades and another option, most likely 10 x fire dragons leaving all the troops choices free.
The only reason I would have for taking them as troops (with a spirit seer) is if I was playing something like a 500point hit squad game. anyways here's what im sort of planning roughly...... (this will! be over points limits and will probably end up an apoc force but in that case it won't matter about force organisaation lol)
HQ1 - Avatar of Khaine - 220 HQ2 - Spiritseer - 70
Troops 1 - 5x Wraith guard + Wave Serpent - 290 Troops 2 - 5x Wraith guard + Wave Serpent - 290 Troops 3 - 5x Wraith guard + Wave Serpent - 290 (IF NOT TAKING SPIRITSEER THEY WILL BECOME 3 SQUADS OF 10 ELITE CHOICES) (this lot would be 1800points on their own lol) Troops 4 - 5x Wraith guard + Wave Serpent - 290 Troops 5 - 5x Wraith blades + Wave Serpent - 290 Troops 6 - 5x Wraith blades + Wave Serpent - 290
Elites 1 - 10 x Fire Dragons + Wave Serpent - 350 Elites 2 - 10 x Fire Dragons + Wave Serpent - 350 Elites 3 - 10 x Howling Banshees + Wave Serpent - 280
Fast Attack 1 - 3x Vyper - 180 Fast Attack 2 - 3x Vyper - 180 Fast Attack 3 - Hemlock Wraith fighter - 185
Heavy Support 1 - Wraith Knight - 300 Heavy Support 2 - Wraith Lord - 175 Heavy Support 3 - Wraith Knight - 300
total = 4330 (before some upgrades lol)
Well there you go defo not going to be able to use that list in a game (well not fully) but it would make for a nice collection I think! would possibly just have to add a few guardian squads to the collection to swap out for wraith guard.

I'd reckommend testing this list out in Vassal before purchasing any/too many of the models. It will help you see the best way of running this list.
I personally think six units of Wraith is too much, and should be cut back down to four at most. Full Troops is what I'd expect from Guard, Tyranids or Orks.

yeah I mean I was thinking to get it down to say 2500 points the best way would just be to half the number of fire dragons in a squad (or take 1) then as you say reduce the wraith guard squads and maybe ditch some waveserpents. if there is the odd 100 points lying around stick in a 10 man guardian squad or something.

oh and I won't be buying all this lot in one lump! I don't have a spare £800 lying around lol (and that's at a discount web store) I think my first purchase will be two Wraith Knights just because they look sweet on their own! lol

The WraithBlades really seem underwhelming to me. I'd mostly stick with WraithGuard in Wave Serpents. Vectored Engines are a nice option for those Serpents, btw, so you can spin around in the Movement phase to drop off the WraithGuard as far forward as possible, and then turn your front armour and shield back toward the enemy after firing your Turret weapons in the Shooting Phase.
I'd take a couple of small squads of jetbikes for at least a couple of the Troops Choices. They're cheap and great for holding in Reserves and zooming in to take/Contest Objectives later in the Game.

yeah my only issue with jetbikes is they need still need a remodel before I buy any new lol may have to be an ebay job.

I would highly recomemnd an army of 1000 points or maybe 1500 of entirely wraith and then see how that goes before buying anything more.
I find I am much more likely to play a small game than an apoc game, and that while it i s great to theme in one army, it is greater to theme in several.
Wraith is very cool- have a look at the forgeworld wraitrh spirit seer lord thing with D cannon - very nice! (in fact, check out all of IA11..)
I would also recommend that you once you reach points of 2000 you should build armies out of units you like the look of, have nice modelling and painting prospects and aren't all about competitively. You will enjoy the hobby more and the games will be more because you care about their individual character rather than their performance on a stat sheet.
Might be worth waiting for the Iyanden book to come out as it allows wraithknights to be warlords amongst other things.

i would suggest dropping the 2 units of wraith blades and switching them with guardians with missile platform this complement wraith armys lack of range amd fits fluff wise buy the iyaden book straight off ther back 1 wraithknioght can be taken as hq and all units get battle focus

ok I wont be getting the book its the same price as a full codex!! how much different could a lyanden army be compared to a standard elder army, and how could the most interesting prospect, (wraith knight warlord) justifiably be restricted to just that faction?

exactly, ill just find out if there are any differences in the FO chart and any restrictions on having my wraith lord and / or knight as a warlord, the rest is irrelevant at that price lol, a supplement to something that costs £30 should be no were near that price, otherwise its not a supliment its basicly its own codex.

No differences in the FOC. What's mentioned in that link is literally all of the new Rules in the Iyanden Dex.

exactly so I don't need the book I just have to say "this is my Iyanden wraith army!" and no one can say any different!

Are you going to be painting them in the standard Iyanden scheme? It is ridiculously easy to do now--apparently for the yellow all you have to do is use one of the new washes over white primer, and then extreme highlight edges with white. Makes me regret having chosen snakey-red Sphess Elfs all those years ago...

No im going for a unique scheme, got too many boring armies, Ultramarines, Black Legion, grey knights etc want a change! currently going for a bone colour for armour, with blue gems as bone = bone, wraith bone = wraiths you see were im going lol can't decide on a name for my craftworld, army will be something like the Wriathlords of.........enter craftworld....... or eternal warriors of .......enter craftworld....., something along those lines but more thought out! lol

Interesting... So they are going to look like Howling Banshees then? You definitely need to do some Wraithblades with the twin swords in that scheme. Would. Look. Epic. If tomorrow is nice outside, I'm going to re-prime my squad of 10 old metal Wraithguard, 10 Warp Spiders, and Warlocks that I stripped last week. Also got some Shining Spears that I need to touch up the priming on, and some Scorpions that I need to hit. Once I get my Dire Avengers finished up, I'm going to go in and redo one of my Guardian squads, then alternate between painting Aspects and Guardians, with my converted Avatar (double-bladed Wailing Doom), Wraithlord, and Wraithguard thrown in as special treats.

yeah similar to banshee's I suppose! I have just completed building my second wraith knight, going to build the last one tomorrow but need to decide how to base as the first two have large objects (I wont disclose yet ) that they are set on. nneed something for the third, this one will be the melee version with sword, sheild and shuriken cannons. do I pose it in an action move or in a relaxed stance? hmmmmm pictures to come when they are all built and primed
