The rules say that a vehicle that moves at combat speed may still fire a weapon at full ballistic skill. Does this supercede the rules for weapon types. So a heavy weapon, can that still move at combat speed and fire full ballistic skill?
The reason I ask is that I am thinking of running a Hydra tank as a flyer back up but also to combat skimmers. I know that it will be targeted though because of the AA and anti skimmer abilities. So if I keep it in reserve and then it comes on, can it shoot?
Also on a side note with skyfire it would still only fire snap shots at skimmers anyway yeah?

correct, however the hydra uses his full BS for skimmers as well. in the rulebook it is mentioned quite clearly on what a model with skyfire can use his full BS and on which he can't

Yes. This is because Vehicles are Relentless, which lets them break some of the Rules regarding Heavy Weapons. And Rapid Fire Weapons, but that part only applies to Walkers.

So its a reasonable tactic to protect it but kind of depends if it show up in time

the main problem with a hydra is the lack of ionterceptor, allowing the flyer a chance to destroy it. Now, if your group allows forgeworld units, you could try the hydra platform, or even better, some sabre platforms. these models are 40K approved so in general your opponent doesn't have any reason not to allow them.

One of the things that most people miss is that the Hydra has 2 Hydra autocannons on the turret, when on the move the Hydra fires one twin linked AC at full BS and the other has to snap fire as its not a fast or heavy vehicle. Due to game mechanics the best out come is from it sitting still and shooting at flyers, flying MC's and skimmers. Give it camo netting and put behind an Agies line for a 3+ cover save all day long though.
