I've always wanted to make a swamp and I finally found all the stuff needed to make what I envisioned. Here is what I started with, some mdf bases, pink foam rocks and spackle. IMGP4552 by Doug Crabb, on Flickr I added some paint, some plastic plants, a few clear peebles and I was at the mid stage. You might notice some of the "islands" in the swamp actually have mouths and TEETH (bits of plastic fork). Check this out! I made a similar terrain piece years ago using similar methods, except I used gloss polyurethane varnish over a gradation of light around the banks to dark green in the center for the water area, and it looks very much like these.

Thanks guys. Once I had all the pieces everything went together quickly. The longest time was spent waiting for things to dry. I got the whole project done in less than a week. I am now working on a suitable battle mat to put them on. Will take and post a final photo when all is done.

Actually, the battle mat that you photographed them on looks great as is, in my opinion. The contrast between the light green areas of the mat being broken up by the darker green edges of the terrain pieces is quite pleasing to the eye--or at least it is to mine.

Thanks, Trooper, that battle mat has been around awhile, it is actually and old table cloth that just about every WHFB and 40k game that has ever been contested in our house has been played on. I do have a black bed sheet that I use for city battles of 40K and the Mines of Moria for The LOTR. I am trying to graduate from the table cloth and sheet to actual mats that I make myself. I am trying the canvas and caulking method of making mats. I've made an ice world and a city mat so far and they look great but I haven't played on them yet. I could post a pic or two if you are interested.

Oh wow! The effect was so pleasing I didn't even notice it was a tablecloth... Still, it looks really good, but yeah I'd love to see the mats that you have made.

Ah yes! I remember your snow mat from a while back, with the old school Cylon base ship bits. Awesome. I will have to tell my friends at the gaming club about your city mat, as their city board is having issues with the surface of the street areas flaking off.

those swamps look sweet mate! Agreed! I always fancied doing something like that for my Nids. It's great that you invest time in terrain, so much better than cereal boxes and pringles tubes. And when someone moves a coke can that you thought was terrain to have a swig....

Thanks guys, I live in an area where there are not a lot of players (we started a Game Club at school so hopefully that will improve) and you can only paint so many figures before you need a break. Terrain is a nice break because you can free hand more and don't have to be as painstakingly precise as when painting models.
