09/11/13 Update! been a while, thread was dropping... lol So last time I posted I was ready to prime the models. This is now complete, I used Halfords matt white primer, twice the size and nearly half the price of GW primer. I then Base coated the whole model with the new macragge blue spray. since spraying the base on last weekend I have been slowly getting some block colours onto the thunder hawk and painting some troops in between to break up the monotony, this model is big! and takes a long time to get round all the details even with a large brush. So here is a teaser of how im getting on so far, by tomorrow night I hope to be ready to start adding some proper detail colours and experimenting with washes and highlighting before I get onto the main model in this way...... I have also been working on a plan for a flying base, got to love ebay on this one!!!! Ive decided to use 30mm diameter clear acrylic solid tube for the flying base pole rather than a solid metal or wooden one, i also dont want to drill a dirty great whole in the underside of the model to fit the flying base so im developing a small clamp with rubber grips that should fit nicely into the space were the landing gear comes out of, ill give pictures of this at a later date. For the main base itself i was wracking my brain trying to thing of the best thing for the job, do i use a very large wooden base, do i fill a plastic dish with lead for the weight? then it hit me, (not literally) a microphone stand base! 3.5kg base with a 25cm diameter! bearign in mind i want to mount the thunderhawk about 25-30 cm in the air from the base i need it to be heavy (the model is very heavy!) The Base is cast iron but with a rubber coating which will be an ideal base the paint from! the base will end up being a diorahma of sorts.... well thats all for now, more updates soon. Need to crack on though before i start my next big project!

I have one question for you, I thought you were going for a casual look with the Marines inside? Or has that changed? Because they look like your very generic, action posed marines However, great work and speed with the painting mate . You've got a challenge on your hands that's for sure! Good idea on the microphone stand for a base, consider this thread bookmarked! Which I'm ashamed to say I haven't done yet!

cool thanks cosmic, yeah if you read back a couple of updates ago I explained that the interior of the thunder hawk (apart from the exit ramp area) is tiny! a normal size marine wont fit in there! and the pilots must have to crawl through to the cockpit so alas my plans for down time marines are no more, so generic action pose marine bursting out of the exit ramp are the boring option im going ahead with. all magnetized of course so I can take them out, swap them around etc. the action pose marine will also have their own spots on the diorama im planning for the base, need to decide what to do for the diorama exactly/ who they should be fighting, possibly tyranids as ive never bought any. might have to get a large tyranid monstrous creature for the veteran vanguards to fight

That's a big base... I love the mic stand idea too, a flash of inspiration!

yeah the mic stand is guna be great for a stordy base, may seem overkill but seriously you need a base that heavy to keep the centre of gravity at the bottom! The acrylic pole is currently 50cm's but it will get shortened before mounting the model, I need to organise going to a friends workshop to borrow a lathe and some taps and dies so I can get the pole to screw into the mic stand. this will be essential for when the model is stored. you may also have missed the other more important part of the teaser

24/11/13 hello peeps, been a bit slow with the updates due to work and stuff but getting back on the project this weekend. been experimenting with finish. The rest of my Smurfs follow a snowy/icy theme, (bases etc) I finished the rest of my painted smurfs by dry brushing necron compound on edges and raised surfaces and I found (IMO) it fives a nice metallic / icy effect. Here is a shot of my test piece next to its counterpart. I need to go back a re touch a couple of areas but you should get the basic idea from this.... Honest and constructive critique is welcome as always! .......

looking at the pic it does seem like the copper strips at the top are a bit too much on the gold side after using golden griffon on them so may redo them.

At first glance I didn't like the effect, however now I've actually read your post properly about the ice etc....I love it. The whole TH should look really striking when it's done. How's it going at the moment?

exterior and 60% of interior will be finished, (I hope)........lol
I personally think its got a lot more detail than say the airbrushed blue one featured in the escalation book. ive dotted paint on every single rivet lol I wont have my final weathering effects or the base done by this weekend.

The black legion were advancing like a storm on the horizon, pasanius turned to his commander,
"Uriel the traitors advance, were is are support?"
"Fear not brother are lord is on his way, he wished to lead are assault against these traitors."
Uriel turned to his battle brothers ordering them to sure up the defences. As he gave the order a faint sound on the wind caught his attention before the distinctive sound of a craft entering the lower atmosphere,
"Pasanius"
"Yes my captain?"
"Are salvation has arrived"......

The Chappy is very cool, could use some script, but I love it. I curious how are you going to do the engines when completed? Your blues are spot on, is the assault troops going to be painted separate?

Your blues are spot on, is the assault troops going to be painted separate? Thanks for the comments as every peeps, to answer the points above I need to get another fine detail pen to add some scribble to the chappy, the blue you can see on the bulk of the model in the old pictures in the macragge blue spray from gw. ive honestly forgotten if I used a white or a grey primer, I think it was white like the rest of my smurfs. The blue parts have all had another coat of blue brushed on after details and then washes, ive not kept the thread up to date that well at the various stages but it in near completion, I promise ass for the engines ive not done the cop out way of just leaving them plain silver as ive seen so many people do with thunderhawks (one of the worst examples of a thunderhawk paint job for me being the one in the escalation book). ive detailed all the pipes and rivets and grills etc. I may consider some weathering on them eventually but im not going to weather anything until the model is fully assembled and ive practiced on something else a bit cheaper and less time consuming first lol update due soon.

Update 29/12/13 well its been a long time since an update proper and tbh its going to be a little longer still until I give you a detailed look at the whole model, im still debating how or if im going to weather the model as im being a bit cautious because of the amount of time ive spent on it, need to practice these techniques a bit more before I go wild on the t-hawk so anyways for today ill just leave you with a picture of the t hawk amongst the rest of my ultramarines (half finished ultramarines lol) the outside of the t hawk is basicly complete save weathering so it parade worthy at least going to take a small break from it now its in a glued together state and concentrate on getting more of my marines painted up a bit. enjoy....

I have a few tips and techniques that I use that may help with the weathering, and I'm pretty sure Cosmic has a few that he uses as well. PM me

alright thanks ill remember that when I get around to doing it, ive been reading some of cosmics threads on weathering etc and its more a case of needing practice and not having the balls rather than not understanding how its done lol I want to get my ultras near completion and then start on some scenery pieces which will be idea for practicing weathering and the like.
