Greetings fellow Commanders of the Imperium!
I want to make a nice little fluffy Guard Regiment as a side project, away from my Iron Warriors. I've settled on Catachans, and I have an urge to pack as many Ordanance weapons into the Army as possible. The ideal Fluff reason for this would be an Artillery Regiment, and I think it seems reasonable to beleive such Catachan Regiments would exist. Where do you guys stand on this idea?
Thanks in advance. Dave.

defo cant see any problem with this. maybe they would have utility tanks that clear jungle and pull the artillery. could have specialist infiltrators like guardsman Marbo who spot for them!

Yeah, no problems at all from my point of view. Artillery was used pretty extensively by the U.S. military in Vietnam, along with tanks, so SPGs can play in the jungle. I've got a Basilisk company in progress for my 'Chans, drawn from an arty regiment that works alongside the infantry and armored regiments in my collection for combined arms. In the earlier Imperial Armor books, FW provided several color plate examples of Manticores that were used by Catachan regiments. I believe the rockets on some were noted as being loaded with incendiary warheads to set the jungle on fire so as to burn out the opposition...

No objections from me. Just be sure to slather those bassies in camo nets!

No objections from me. Just be sure to slather those bassies in camo nets! Reds Yes. Moar camo netting = MOAR GOODER!!! I don't recall if I've got any decent photos of my completed Bassie in my Picture Post thread or not, but yeah it's got gauze treated with PVA, then hit with the old Camo Green, washed with the old Chestnut ink, and dry brushed with the old Rotting Flesh draped over several areas, along with some custom artwork on the gun shield.

Cheesecloth can also work well for netting, I've found. Any married woman over 32 probably has some in the house, if you can't find any in stores. PVA glue and a bit of flock can also make it look a little more "jungly".

Yeah, the grid pattern size on gauze is essentially the same as that on cheesecloth. Small gauze pads are easier to work with, though, than a giant roll of cheesecloth.

Catachans are also based on the Australian Army. The Australian "jungle division" only featured one artillery regiment rather than the usual three, though after vociferous protest the other two were re-added in 1945. It also thoroughly stripped out transport and support elements, which meant it largely relied on the US Navy to move around and Seabees to build and extend the beachheads.
Given that the artillery regiment probably wouldn't be able to move often, or at all if it was on a deathworld, I could definitely see Catachans using a lot of Basilisk emplacements. A Vietnam-style firebase could be a fantastic centerpiece, or even the basis, of an army -- Basilisks as the core of course, some fortifications, infantry to man them, a Hydra or two for AA defense, some Ogryns and Sentinel powerlifters to do the digging and carrying.

Authentic! A PIE PACKING PLAYER!!!!
I second Reds opinion, camo nets and mortars! LOTS OF MORTARS!
Griffons, Medusas, Basilisks and perhaps way way down the line, a Thunderer Siege Tank?
I'd also pack GLs in standard squads wherever possible for additional fluff purposes.
Need to see some Joint Fire Observers too ;-)

Its great to see such a Response... I am going to pick up a squad of Jungle Fighters tomorrow and start working on them as a Regular Infantry Squad. I'm more syked about this than anything Guard has done in a long time.

My mate and I debated this awhile ago, either having an army of rowdy Australian artillerymen. Where they'd shout into their voxcasters, scream profanities to all hell, but despite all that they would ultimately do their jobs.
Though, more on the topic at hand. There's nothing unreasonable about it, tithes need to be fulfilled and the Munitorum use what is at hand.

I wanted to make my III Sqn all Catachan Penal legion led by Straken and a Lord Commisar. They'd be backed up by Basilisks and Hydras. And all the Sentinels that I bought on ebay whilst drunk. And this dodgy hellhound that I scratch built.
I had everything built and painted except for the 66 Catachan models.
But then ... suddenly ... there were no more Penal Legionnaires.

Though not mentioned in the lore very often, both Catachan armored and artillery regiments do exist. The only thing they don't have, lore wise, is a heavy infantry regiment of all carapace guys, and they generally don't have drop troops.

There's an airmobile Catachan/Elysian regiment out there, somewhere.

Yeah, in the first version of Apocalypse, there was mention of a Catcachan Regiment that became so adept at aircav ops that the Imperial Navy permanently attached the Valkyries to the unit, 'Chans were trained up to crew Valkyries, and the Regimental Colonel became the pilot of the command Valkyrie, which became the "Steel Eagle" special vehicle data sheet.
