Dont think iv seen this mentioned anywhere on here, but I purchased myself the core box set at the weekend and managed to get a couple of games in last week with a mate. I was impressed.
The minis and paintwork are to a high standard (for a mass produced product), and the rules and simple enough to pick up and play, with enough special rules to keep the game interesting. Whats more is the are plenty of expansion sets that contain a new ship or two with their own rules, characters, and missions. And the price doesnt bring a tear to your eye like Games Workshop does. Also the rule book can be downloaded from Fantasy Flight!
What makes this game different and interesting is the way each turn is played out. Plays first decide what the ship(s) movement is by placing a counter face down with the maneuver (spell?) on. For example: Move Straight 5 inches, Or turn left three inches etc. Then both players show there movement, and the pilot character with the lowest skill (each ship is designated a character or classed as a rookie pilot) moves first. Once movement is does players may make actions. In the same order, an action could be lock onto a target, or do a barrel roll. Next comes Shooting. This time pilots with the higher skill goes first. Eight sided symbol dice are used for combat and defense (different set of dice for each roll). Then results, modifiers, and damage is dealt. They are a lot of cards and cardboard cut outs used in game, and once you have your head round the basics its really easy to bring more complex rules in. Another good point to mention is you only need a two foot square board to play!
The content for the core box is everything you need to play. Dice, counters, character cards, damage cards, mission tokens, one X-wing and two Tie Fighters. They are even rules for bigger games using squadrons of fighters, and as I mentioned above they are plenty of expansion sets including Y-wings, A-wings, and even the Transporter ship to recreated the escape from Hoth (comes with another X-wing)
So, now I have told you how amazing it is, go buy it!

Yeah, X-Wing is pretty kickass. I've got full squadrons each of TIE Fighters and Interceptors, 2 TIE Advanceds, and a flight of TIE Bombers; plus a flight each of A-,B-, X-, and Y-Wings, as well as the Falcon, Slave I, "Moldy Crow," and Lambda shuttle. Been getting people into it around here. Can't wait for the Rebel Transport, Imperial Aces, and TIE Avenger and Z-95 Headhunter expansion sets to drop... Not so much interested in the E-Wing and the TIE Phantom, though.
I need to get everything set up on stands and photograph the glory on my star field battle mat at some point.

How many craft is it two a squadron? Not really read much past the basic rules as we where trying to get to grips with the game haha You won't find that information in the rules as it's drawn purely from Star Wars novels (the X-Wing series), and Wookieepedia. A flight is composed of 4 fighters (which can split into 2 fighter elements), a squadron is composed of 12 fighters (or 3 flights), and a wing is composed of 6 squadrons (based on the Imperial Navy's fighter ops organization). Wookieepedia linky.A squadron isn't really useable in normal game play, as most games standard points limits will have you using a flight, or a flight and a half at most--especially on a smaller playing area. However, I collected full squadrons of TIE Fighters and TIE Interceptors just for the "cool factor." The club I play with does have aspirations of one day doing an "Apocalypse" type X-Wing game on a 4' X 16' gaming surface where everyone who plays X-Wing will put down all their ships for a huge furball (Battle of Endor style) which promises to be epic.

Damn it! Nothing cool like that happens where I live. That sounds pritty cool I must say. I think depending on friend interest will dictate if one goes to the dark side, and the other becomes a Jedi, but I still plan on getting a good size force of both Sith and Jedi, but not quite as weighty as yours

Yeah, that's the one problem that my gaming club will have is faction balance. Most of us are Imperial Navy Fanboys/TIE Jockeys, so we might not have enough Rebel Scum/Targets to all be able to deploy our whole collections (or even just my collection to be honest) against. I'm sure I'll be donating my four flights of each type of Rebel starfighter, along with the Falcon, to someone to use during the game so as to back up the opposition's numbers. In one game I saw last summer, Wedge, Biggs, and Lando with Chewie in the Falcon totally punked Darth Vader and a bunch of elite pilots in tooled up TIE Interceptors. Biggs actually did most of the heavy lifting in that game, which is definitely not a match up to the canon events seen on screen.

I finally got around to photographing my collection of Imperial Navy stuff. Everything in one shot: TIE Advanced leading a flight of TIE Interceptors, with a flight of TIE Fighters trailing: Member of the 181st Wing leading a flight of TIE Interceptors, with flights of TIE Fighters and TIE Bombers trailing: Lambda Shuttle and Royal Guard TIE interceptor following the flight of TIE Bombers: Member of the 181st Wing leading a flight of TIE Interceptors: Shot across the TIE FIghter squadron being trailed by the flight of TIE Bombers, the Lambda Shuttle, and Royal Guard TIE Interceptor:

Awesome. My second Imperial Aces expansion pack, which I got for free (essentially) using a cashback award on my credit card, arrived today, and I just found an eBay seller selling TIE Interceptors at $3 off MSRP, with cheap shipping, so I dropped the hammer on four of them. Once they arrive, and with a bit o' brushwork, my flights of Royal Guard and 181st Wing Interceptors will be complete.

awesome..
I have bought this for my workplace.
(I work in a residential children's home before you ask).
Hopefully the 'wow cool' factor will outweigh the impatient 'I can't be bothered to learn rules' factor.

I just re-painted some stock TIE Interceptors to bear the stripes of the 181st Wing. WIP 1: WIP 2: Finished result: The actual Imperial Aces pre-painted 181st Wing minis are to the left, whilst my re-paints of stock Interceptors are on the right. Up next will be two Royal Guard TIE Interceptors.

Here's a stock TIE Interceptor being custom re-painted in Royal Guard colors. WIP: Finished (aside from the wash drying): All I did was go over the gray areas with Mephiston Red, and then went back in with White Scar over the cannon barrels and some detailing on the wings and their support pylons. The solar panels were then touched up with thinned Abaddon Black to clean up Mephy Red that ended up on them. Then I hit the mini with some Nuln Oil, and then again with the wash brush loaded with water to think the Nuln Oil down, and absorbed some of the excess.

Hmm... Nuln Oil didn't take well to the mini. It "frosted." I had to redo the red, and then washed it with thinned Abaddon Black and Lahmian Medium, which seemed to do the trick. Here's a group shot: IMPERIAL ACES!!!

Every time I click I thread, I think "Oh maybe there won't be any of Trooper's creations that make me feel shame in it" While these are simpler, you really should take your painting skills to ebay.
I was pretty sold on interceptors at first, but they seem a little pricy. The A-Wing and Tie/I just don't last very long and it seems like paying a lot for their upgrades isn't worth it. I just played a Game verse a buddy. We are in the single digits with games completed. I am always surprised with how this game can turn around very quickly.
Lists: Rebels (me) Ten Numb w/Auto Blaster (Unblockable Sullustan God) Green A-Wing Rookie X-Wing Roark Garnet HWK-290
Empire Dark Curse Obsidian Tie Fighter Obsidian Tie Fighter Soontir Fel w/ Push the limit Omicron Lambda w/Heavy Laser Cannon
Turn 2: I hit Soontir Fell for one damage with the A-Wing and then Fel and Dark Curse pop the A-Wing and bring the HWK down to one hull in one round of shooting.
Turn 4: I get a lucky break and pop Soontier Fell with every shot I have. HWK goes down.
Turn 5: Kill a Tie and then the X-Wing goes down. It is now 2 Ties and a Lambda verse the Ten Numb, I think its over.
The rest of the game basically was Ten Numb wrecking every ones butts. Unbelievable! This game makes a great break from 40k, with its fast pace, easy rules, and incredible depth.

Thanks on complimenting me paintin' skills. The Royal Guard Interceptor re-paints turned out a bit darker than the actual ones from the Imperial Aces kit. I may have to go back in with a lighter red to see if I can get a better color match.
RE: TIE Interceptors. In my gaming club it is just about mandatory to equip them with Stealth Devices. Makes them almost impossible to hit!

Yes, yes we can. My buddy who lives in Charles Town wants to start getting X-Wing games in at Huzzah, but the advantage of playing at my house in the Super Basement [TM] is that we can partake in tasty adult beverages. X-Wing has also become really popular with the gaming group, Ineptus Astartes, that I nominally play with up in Columbia, MD, where I used to work years ago. We started off purely as a 40K/Fantasy club, but other games have been creeping in as people have been getting disillusioned with GW. It was where I was first exposed to X-Wing. Looking forward to seeing your collection! Also, everyone else who plays, please photograph and share your stuff.

Looks like the Rebel scum are getting an aces expansion set of their own, with the A-Wing painted to resemble the concept artwork (wonder if FFG took a cue from a guy who custom re-painted an early release A-Wing mini to match the concept art and made a YouTube video of it?)... Linky.

Grr... My discount card at the FLGS down the street from my house expires tomorrow, and they haven't gotten in the shipment of Rebel Transports that they were supposed to get, even though all of the Targets and Barnes & Nobles in my area have gotten them in, so it looks like I won't be able to finish out my enrollment in this year's discount card with a big score, and will have to buy another year's worth of discount card membership.

So yeah, two TIE Bombers fat to the max with proton torpedoes and concussion missiles, with three TIE Fighters and a Lambda Shuttle with the guy who is a fire magnet running interference, really make a mess out of the Rebel Transport. My pals and I played one of the scenarios that came with the transport. The Rebel players had to keep it alive for 8 turns; my Imperial teammate and I blew it out of space in 4. Our reserve TIE Fighter and three TIE Interceptors didn't even get a chance to enter the area of play.

Canefire and I had a really, really fun game of X-Wing at Huzzah Hobbies in Ashburn, VA this evening. It's neat store with tons of space, lots of tables, and ample parking. We're going to try to make a weekly gaming night a regular thing (40K as well as X-Wing, and possibly Attack Wing if we can get the poor-quality minis fixed up and re-painted) and it'd be neat it more local IGMB members would like to join us.
