Ok so basically I am putting together a foot list and plan to use several HWS as a replacement for armour. I currently have AC in with 3 infantry squads and then 2 HWS with lascannons and I plan on using another 2 HWS with mortars because I see them as being amazingly useful due to not using LOS to fire on the enemy and so they are able to hide and still drop little plates on heads. It's enough to keep enemy heads down (I'm thinking Tau fire warriors hiding and using their range against me)
So basically what I am after is a reason why so many people seem so down on mortars?
Thanks for reading and I look forward to hearing your answers.

they have a low damage output due to their low S and AP5 against MEQ armies. that being said, being capable of doing dammage while hiding out of LOS is why i lowe mortar heavy weapon teams and try to include them in evey list. yes, sometimes they will suck, but all in all i've never really been dissapointed by these guys! stick them in cover, close to an objective and see what they do for you!
That being said, a mortar heavy weapons team is 60 pts, but an earthshaker heavy artillery carriage (with 4 crew) is 75 pts..., and a thudd gun is even cheaper, coming in at 50 pts. the only down side is that they take up a heavy support slot, although that can be solved by going double force org chart! this video will show you why as an artillery lover you should at least own 1 quad launcher!

Everything Hendrick said is correct. The issue is more with heavy weapon teams in general. They are far too expensive for what they bring, mortars especially because they are so weak. And they die pretty easily. He pointed to some IA units, but the griffon in the regular codex is only 15 points more and much more effective. (The only minus is that it can't score)
Like many subpar units, they aren't going to lose you the game. And they aren't terrible, but there are much more cost effective ways you can use your points.

Thanks for the replies guys. hendrik I love artillery and used to watch AS90s firing when I was in Germany, they used to try and get us comms guys to stand under the barrels when they fired but the air blast was enough to almost knock you over. My fave artillery piece is the MLRS which in games terms would be a cross between a manticore and a deathstrike and is known by the British army as the GRID SQUARE KILLER because of its abilities. I know that mortars have weaker strength/AP but in an all infantry army I think that something like a griffon/basilisk would be picked off too easily and I don't have the IA rules for the other stuff.

Mortars are amazing. I love them. A lot! .. I'm sure there are better ways to spend points but multiple barrage rules are very effective for sniping and scoring multiple hits on units with more than one wound. In battle they serve me well: commissar.proboards.com/thread/17880/guard-1500-pic-heavy

Even though my true love has and always will be with the infantry in both the 40k and working world, I do maintain a soft spot for arty. From the lowest mortar team to the most advanced long range IDF weapon the 41st millennium has to offer, who doesn't love the ability to kill something without being in harms way yourself?? It just makes sense! Mortars can, have, and always will be called upon by any grunts so credit where it is due. ... Plus who doesn't get gleeful when your lowly pie plates manage to bag a couple of termies or other meq armoured nasties

I would really recomend picking up Imperial Armour: Volume One, Second Edition- Imperial Guard
(I am really starting to hate typing out its title though, it really is a mouthful!)
It has rules for field artillery batteries, which are legal for use in games of regular 40k. For one HS choice you get 3 Heavy Quad Launchers or 3 Heavy Mortars (the same gun used by the Griffon).
You can also take Heavy Artillery Carriage batteries, which use the same force org, but give you 1-3 Earthshaker or Medusa guns with 4 crew each. Few things look cooler on the tabletop than a battery of earthshaker gun carriages.
(and when you are using artillery in 40k, there is very little difference in functionality between a Basilisk and an Earthshaker gun carriage- who actually moves their basilisk or remembers to fire the heavy bolter at things?)
