Printing tech is coming on fast. New machine just come out that can print this in 70 mins OK it's a $3000 machine but machines that cost that a year ago are now going for less then $1000.

That's pretty insane, although I'd like to see a primed and painted version of something it prints, just because that color obscures the detail a bit.

I always looked into this for the potential for making conversion bitz, but it worked out quite an expensive outlay.

I design and make conversion bits for model tanks. Some parts I print myself but most I sell though shapeways. My printer has more then paid for itself and now I'm saving up for a SLA printer so I can do more detailed parts.

Very nice Woz. I'd love to have something like this for printing out some BFG ships and other bits and bobs (your terrain bits come to mind)

If you fabricated a battlefleet you'd have to stand around while it printed, laughing maniacally.

Woz borrowed a price guide from GW £20 a turret, maaaan im in the wrong business. That's cheap in 1/16 scale. Turret conversion usually go for £50 - £75. And you can pay £10 for just a machine gun barrel. Some people think nothing on spending £1k on a single tank. Mind you some of the FW stuff is getting into lottery winners territory. This hobby can be more expensive then 40k (except you don't need to change or buy a new tank every time the rules change). That's why I think one day most modellers will have their own 3D printer (or access to one).

I noticed that World of Tanks has teamed up with a small 3D printing studio to print out shelf trophy tanks of your WoT vehicles. 3D printer people who have been watching the way the wind blows, I'd say this counts as it picking up some force.

I know a couple of guys who have SLA machines where they work. They both use the machines to print gaming figures over night so when they get in in the morning there's a new batch of mini's waiting. Though they have to take it in turns with their workmates.
Imagine what it'll be like when schools and colleges have access to cheaper and faster machines or when the latest CLIP printers are less the £500.
I've seen my machine going for under £400 which is half of what I paid 15 months ago.

My library system is getting closer (within a few months) to having access to one or two 3D printers. They'll be at different branches, but I may get a chance to experiment. Minis for my RPG campaign would be particularly useful, except I just read an old KODT article about making your own monsters out of Sculpey. I'll have to think about that...

There's software out there that allows you to make 3D models from photographs www.123dapp.com/catch so you can sculpt a model, take some photo's then turn it into a 3D model. Then you can print out more or even use software to change parts then you can have lots of the same model that are all a bit different. This is my try at using the software - warrenhudsonmodelling.blogspot.com/2015/04/3d-model-from-photos.htmlI've been busy doing over thing but it's something I'll be using soon.

That is so fething awsome its unreal!
I had no idea the cost of 1/16 was so high, heh.
Cant believe you get that quality out of a £400 printer, how much would it cost in material to print a whole vehicle? Say a Leman Russ size so i can picture it in my mind.

A 1kg reel of ABS or PLA costs about £20. It's hard to say how many tanks you'd get but at a very rough guess I'd say anywhere between 10 - 20. If you build it well with minimal supports.

Even 5 would have been a good answer. When i get some excess i may have to invest... by then the machine will be £50, haha.

GW has no need of it. Unless 3D printing becomes more efficient than injection moulding.

Id rather pay for a license to print for my own use than buy a box of cadians for example, the problem would be sky high prices for the license and pirate designs.

GW has no need of it. Unless 3D printing becomes more efficient than injection moulding. I was thinking of having figures that you can change the pose or weapons, add or remove kit etc. Imagine being able to individualise your own company commander on the GW website. They then have it printed and posted to you.
