A friend of mine told me...."Why play Imperial Guard?? They Suck...their like freakin starship troopers man!" ....I stood there, furious as hell, but gave him a reluctant smile anyways, then i told HIM. "Why play space wolves? Because they have furry nuts???" Dammit, when i got home i just sat on my bed, and wondered what made the Imperial Guard one of the most heroic forces i have ever set my craft knife on. Does anyone know? Seriously?

Yes. Large Numbers Large Tank Choices Better Force Orgaisation Better Upgrades Most Versatile Army
Who gives a damn if some Cremite Armourd 7 foot Gezzer with 4 Hearts can kill 70 'Nids with One Weapon
It takes true heart to take on a 'Nid force of Just 70, with 40 Flash lights, 3 Russes and a Sentinal. Get what im saying?

Yeah man, but thats what im most afraid of...remember the tyrok fields? I mean of course we rock the starships out of orbit but fighting alongside so many allies and imperium troops just makes me uneasy...the emperor should have thought twice abt the primarchs, remember horus ? wasnt HE a space marine to begin with?

The Emperor? Im unsure about the History of Space Marines. I dont really like them much.
ImpGuard is what I play, I hate it when down at my Local GW We Switch Armies, And I play Tau or something.
Tyrok Fields, Where a bunch of Triators reveled themselves. Yes. Now you Remeber it. The Guard Won. The banner never touched the floor. So you need to realise man If Space Marines are the Sword, Sliceing Quicky into the Enemy Then the Imperial Guard are the Hammer, smashing everything!

You should get some Pic's of your Army up in the Pics Section, and an Army list in the Army List Section. just be aware, do not post individual point cost, only point cost for total units and army.

Cos you need a brain to make an IG army that works and does well consistantley. Any muppet can win with Smurf's.
The biggest thing that makes a IG player stand out from all the others is that no matter how many times they get beat they stick to their guns and keep losing, knowing that one day against all the odds they'll pull off a stunning victory, the kind of victory that legends are made of.
Some people semm to switch armies straight away if they don't win from game one. A friend of mine started with Dark Eldar then went to Space Wolves then Grey Knights then Nids. He starts his new mega army loses then picks a new army. His latest army is IG with Inquistor Allies (which is a whimps way around the IG's problems.)
Everyone can relate to the IG because they're normal humans. So when that lone guardsman takes down that Bloodthirster with his rifle butt, even the most hardcore Necron player will be able to relate to it and think "what a guy" but if a Necron did the same, well who cares.

all armies have strengths and weaknesses but no army has such glaring weaknesses as the imperial guard. I can't remember (literally) the last time I fought a battle that didn't end up in a big mosh pit of melee madness. oh wait, now I remember, it was the last time I won. but even that ended in melee, just a small melee one of the reasons I love guard is that they're just like me - I'd have absolutely NO chance of becoming a space marine in 40k reality, I'm scrawny, my hand to hand skills suck, my ballistic skill is decent, but dude, I admit it, I'm BS3! so seeing as I'm just a guardsman in real life, I stick to commanding what I would be - cannon fodder. this gives the guard a special place in my heart because it means I can identify with my models in a way (yes this sounds rediculous and cheesy - identifying with my MODELS) that space marines or necrons or some uber army can't. It makes me happy when my whiteshields drag down a space marine chapter master and finish him off with his own bolt pistol after dogpiling him with little more than clubs and rocks hah (ok buttstocks and lasgun shots but still..not much difference). space marines are expected to win, and when you do achieve victory, you expect that outcome, maybe in the toughest battles you hope for it, but hope for a space marine commander is an inextinguishable and blatant, everpresent thing. hope for a guard commander is fleeting - there one turn, gone the next. for guard to win a battle they must win every single turn, every turn is a deciding point in the battle at which the guard army must perform or perish - for a marine army there is maybe one or two turning points in a battle where they must rise up and emerge victorious to claim an overall victory. for us it's a life of feeding off the scraps and having to find a way to survive. that's what makes me proud. I survive. I come back for more because I like it. when I go home after a victory, the boost in my morale lasts for weeks!! and to be honest, being 'that guy that gets the snot pounded out of him almost every time but damn, does he pull off some resourceful stuff every fight!' is ok with me. I can walk with my head held high and some pride in me because I know that if I can get respect for how well I play, even though I lose, deep down they're all thankful that I'm not applying that brilliant strategic sense to a powerhouse army like space marines. Imagine what I could do with a space marine army if I treated em like my guardsmen and was as resourceful! I'm not trying to toot my own horn, but sometimes it's good to note the pride I have in my growth as a guard commander. taking flesh and blood regular old humans in cardboard flak jackets and commanding them to emerge victorious over superhuman killing machines with full suits of tank armor encasing them is something to be proud of. tanks help vs these kind of foes, but I don't give myself tanks. a couple guardsmen with satchel charges are my heaviest guns for dealing with foes like this. anyway, I'm rambling and totally gonna shut my yap. I love guard because when the underdog destroys the reigning champion of the galaxy it's just too awesome.

I eat nids and eldar, don't sleep and poo on their remaining carcasses. Because i'm a guardsmen. Tboy you hit the nail on the head when describing those moments of brilliance that a guard commander can pull off. With guard it's so hard to take the initiative but when you do it's a wonderful thing. That's why i love my flank charge. It never fails to leave Dark Angels and Ultramarine commanders thinkg 'Oh crap' i didn't see that coming, and that generates a certain amount of pride. Or when executing a brilliant Rough Riders charge into the heart of an ultramarines battleline, killing 5 marines and wounding a librarian. I was particularly proud of that, i waited and waited until the opportunity arose and then 'WHAM!' have that.
Playing Guard takes skill and patience. But above all you become aware of the critical moment in a battle and how to exploit it if possible.
I fielded Grey Knight terminators once because i needed to make up the points but didn't feel any pride in using them. I would much prefer using more veterans instead.
