No one seems to have mentioned this about Cadia's real world inspiration . The fortress city of Iraklion in Krete Greece was named Candia in the 16th century . It was a big fortress right in the nose of the ottoman empire (a real threat to europe back then ) Candia was heavily fortified by the venetians and it took 20 years to fall in its final siege . Any possibility its the inspiration for the fortress world standing right next to the eye of terror ?

Actually I never realised. I've never visited Crete either, I think the only Ottoman era fortress I've seen was in Rhodes, though I've seen an interesting museum in Meteora with lots of muskets, costumes and yatagan knives from the 19th century. The skull reliquary room in one of the monasteries and an icon showing heaven and hell were among some of the most bizarre stuff I've ever seen; it was well worth going.

Isn't the one on Rhodes actually a Knights Hospitaller fortress that the Ottomans just captured?
As to the original post, It's entirely possible and fairly probable that that's where the name and theme of the plant come from, given how many bits of GW fluff are little references like that. Good work on putting two and two together, though, I've never seen that connection made before.

Yes the Knights hospitaler knights of Saint John controlled Rhodes and a couple of other Greek islands for a couple of centuries . Suleiman the great conquered them in the late16th century As for meteora yeah it is pretty awesome . Also did they not have a regiment called byzant jannissaries ? Pretty confusing since ottoman Janissaries led the charge on byzantium aka instabul constatinople on 1453 . Bottom line come to Greece it's interesting nice we play 40k and need every tourist we can get

If there's one thing that GW seems to be educated on, it's European history.

If there's one thing that GW seems to be educated on, it's European history. What do you expect from Brits? I sort of took the Cadians to be Canadians. Always a fun thing to bring up to some fans as thats a berserk-button, but then again I care not at all for them, it a freaking hobby nothing more.

The early designers also cut their teeth on '70s historicals. They certainly got the loose, "narrative" attitude and vagueness of rules from there, but when it comes to complexity, it's like they looked at Featherstone and said, "I bet I could make this waaaay more realist!@#$% I mean, more complex, and multiply the pagecount by 100 into the bargain.

The early designers were still less moronic than the current ones. This is not an accomplishment.

Hmm I tend to see Cadia as a mixture of most modern military forces today... Similar to a heavily militarized modern day America...
I mean, their equipment, doctrines, etc... are among the finest in the Imperium and they export significant amounts of weaponry and training to other planets...
