In a recent battle against a 30k Death Guard army, I found out how great the Medusa is. He used the 30k self-propelled type, and it's really a Demolisher with 36" range. So I checked in Imperial Armour 1 (imperial guard v2), and there is an artillery emplacement there, which uses the Medusa. It's immobile, but it costs 100p. 100p for a 36" range Demolisher cannon, that must be great right? Or is it? What do you think? Is it too fragile?

Medusa is great, I agree, but I prefer to use it as cheap Tank Hunter, with siege shell... 48" str 10 VP1 is a terrible weapon aganist heavy mec list...

Aren't there major disadvantages to deploying a non-mobile artillery piece in this game?

Aren't there major disadvantages to deploying a non-mobile artillery piece in this game? It's on a chimera's chassie... why it must be static?

Because I used the chimera chassie to make a salamander variant kit bash?

Simple solution, get another Chimera? Actually I was looking for a more "creative" solution.

A more creative solution would be to find a bunch of the old ork heavy weapons 'steel' wheels and fabricate said gun carriage if you want the emplaced version. Just know that you sacrifice mobility and durability as your artillery crew are nothing more than half a squad of single wound guardsmen in flak armor, so if something gets close enough to them they are pretty well hosed.

Does this come with a benefit? Like cheaper points cost?

Yes, the towed cannon is cheaper in points than the one mounted on the chassis. Reference the Imperial Armor volume 1 Edition 2 for points costs for both and for rules using towed artillery.

As an experienced player would you advice against such an action? Do you have any thoughts as to the cost vs. effect of my curiosity?

It is viable depending on how you deploy them. If you do it right with intervening terrain and such you can mitigate the likelihood of deep striking units getting to them. It becomes a matter of tactics at that point.
