A quick question for the veteran players out there.
I know there is only one edition of Plastic Catachan models out there. But how many editions of the metal models are there.
I ask because I've decided to collect a few of the metal ones and I'm buying some off ebay. But some of the models look like they're a different "version" for want of a better word.
Is tehis the case? Or is it that the first produced models were a bit rough?
And, If anyone wants to part with there old metal Catachans give me a shout.
Or Schaefer's last chancers

Cheers Jen, That's actually quite helpful for what I need. But I have to ask you one thing ... how did you know I speak German?

If I recall correctly, there were four "generations" of 'Chan metal minis. The first generation was the guys in the infantry squad box (eye patch chainsword/bolt pistol sergeant), special weapons (melta, flamer, plasma), and all of the HW teams (missile launcher [these guys were part of the infantry squad box too]; and the lascannon, mortar, auto cannon, and heavy bolter teams [as separate blister packs]). The second generation was released shortly thereafter and provided additional infantry guys, along with the chainsword/las pistol sergeant, carapace boltgun Lt., vox operator, and the powerfisting Captain, with the boltgun and giant backpack who looks a bit like Arnold S. These generations were all released in 2nd edition 40K. At some point the "grenade launcher babe" special weapon mini was done as a one-off/special event mini that then went into regular production, possibly as part of the third generation where the snipers, Marbo, the demo charge guys, the heavy flamer guys, and original Straken mini were released (in third and/or fourth edition 40K. Then in fifth/sixth edition the various other metal 'Chan officers (with the smaller powerfist, chainsword, and power sword) were released, Straken got an updated mini, and Harker was released.

Were the Cata heavy weapons all released at the same time? I remember the other metal regiments had more heavies added in later; like the Valhallan and Mordian autocannon teams.

I'm fairly certain that the direct fire heavy weapons definitely were all released at the same time, because I'm pretty certain that I got all my metal lascannon, AC, HB, and missile teams at around the same time. The mortar team may have been released somewhat later' I'm not certain though, because I didn't start getting metal 'Chan mortars until years later to use their crew to stick on my Bassies.

well.. I recall having only the figures in the infantry box to use, so I chose 'chans purely because of the missile launcher (well, the resembelence to the marines in aliens may have helped).. and I remember buying up one or two other infantry units just to acces other heavy weapons.
It was the same for the special weapons, I think 'chans had melta, and later had other options added such as plasma gun and flamer, i think this was around the same time as the heavy weapons.
I stopped playing for almost a decade, so was pleasantly suprised when I re-joined and found the additional wepaons and poses for the metal 'chans! I still haven't got all of them... yet.

I think I have the WD where the newer metal heavy weapon teams were released, so expect a necro sometime in the dark future when I find it and take a pic of the page. Not sure if it was about the time Praetorians were released but that would make the most sense. After all Praetorians were just Mordians with a different head.

This has all been very helpful to me guys, thanks. Got another question here though.
Many years ago the old metal Catachan Heavy Weapons Team came in a plain white box. The question is, what weapons were actually in the box?

Got the answer today when I called GW with a product code. So the ones in the box are 3 plastic HWT. Bummer. I'm trying to collect the old metal ones.

Yeah the metal hw teams were one per blister pack, not in a box.
The infantry squads for each regiment had a box but the contents were fixed. Tread mentioned the meltagun, m/l team and sgt with eyepatch, boltpistol and chainsword in the Cata infantry box. There was a second sgt with laspistol and chainsword in the air, without an eyepatch, among the first models but he was blister pack only.

It'd be nice to get at least one example of each of the old metal models. It's just knowing which ones are out there. I'd like a Harker and an Iron Hands but they're going for about £25 each on ebay. I accept that the old metals have become a bit pricey but I'm not sure I want to pay that much.

You can still get the new Straken in metal from GW. The old model was better because he had the plasma pistol in his hand. Good luck finding one. Games Workshop

Nice one Chem, I thought there were no more metal models to be had. Called my local GW yesterday and a metal Harker and Straken are still up for grabs. Amazingly enough they're cheaper than the ones on ebay !!! I actually prefer the new straken but I found an old style one for £12 from the USA.
No metal Marbo's to be had though. Anyone got one they want rid of?

The metal Marbo mini is awful... It's so bad that I, the dedicated 'Chan collector, never even bothered to get one. You're better off converting one from plastic bits. The original 'Chan infantry metal box did, indeed, come with a melta, missile launcher, and the sarge with eyepatch, chainsword, and bolt pistol. But I'm certain that the 'Chan plasma and (normal) flamer metal minis were released at almost the same time, or shortly thereafter because I've always had them in my collection from the first game I played with my 'Chans (when the Chimera, Leman Russ and first metal/plastic Demolisher, and metal/plastic Hellhound were new kits). As mentioned above, we didn't get the grenade launcher until years later, although I went and took a Redemptionist grenade launcher arm set (from Necromunda)and bodged it onto a plastic 'Chan to make a fill in before the "grenade babe" was available. I actually greatly prefer the newer Stranken mini. Much more dynamic pose, and far better sculpt over all. I actually cut my old Straken up to bodge parts onto a plastic 'Chan to make my own custom bionic sergeant back in the day.

Trooper: so you also have one of the demolishers that would roll forward if parked facing downhill... (literally roll, so that it end up resting on its turret).
I don't recall the special weapons coming out, but that might be because I was going to a local non-GW store at that point and they may not have stocked them.

Yup, I had both generations of the plastic/metal hybrid Demolisher kits. Currently all my Demolisher turrets are the second generation ones, but my original Demolisher's hull is still sporting the first generation plasma cannons.

Turns out I had a Marbo all along, just thought he was some random commander of some sort. Honestly, I like him as much as I like the newer Straken. A more dynamic, three dimensional pose ... not flat like the early casts. Some of the early casts look like they've just landed on concrete after a recent and sudden departure from a 300ft cliff edge. Straken Mk1 for example.

There is also the metal Catachan tank commander that comes with the old Exterminator, also had a metal sandbag piece/AC/hull HB.
Edit: there was also that Catachan tank rider, maybe from the same Exterminator kit, not sure.
