G'day guys,
I am a long time suffering IG player who has always played pure Guard armies whilst my mates have eaten the proverbial cheese and have gone to town using the allies matrix-sooo much cheese.
Essentially, I've decided that I might dabble outside of pure guard armies and have a crack at adding another detachment. I was fortunate to get my hands on a cheap Lord Inquisitor Hector Rex so I was thinking of a Inquisition/Grey Knights approach. My army is quite a large, city/urban themed force and I either play against Nids (a lot), BA, DA, DE and very occasionally GK.
Without going too overboard on ridiculous combinations, can anyone recommend any good characters or armies I could pair up with? Something that could either buff my 30-50 guard blobs or a really hard hitting assault unit to make up for my inadequate offensive capability (Asides from my tanks this comes in the form of 5x10man Vet shotgun/flamer squads... Way up there on the coolness/badassery scale but still laughably pathetic).
Cheers =D

You have five Veteran Squads and they're armed with nothing but shotguns and flamers? Before jumping on the cheese cart, maybe you should get some allies from Codex: Meltagun.

Nah got those too -2xMeltas in a rough Rider Squad -2xSquads of 5xman stormies with 2xmeltas -3xMeltas in a 10xman vet squad -2-3xMelta gunners spare that I can chuck into command squads or guardsmen squads as needed. The shotgun flamers are just for the coolness factor to fit in with the urban theme of kicking in doors and clearing rooms-atleast that's how I justify it in the theme. I find they are great for finishing off gaunt squads by dishing out heaps of wounds in the shooting phase and as the gaunts never fall back due to synapse I can always guarantee to finish them off in the assault. Against marines I chuck them in the chimera and hunt devastator squads with them. If they can't kill them through shooting then atleast they tend to tie up the devastators (and their lascannons) in combat for a turn or two. I try and keep one or two squads near my tanks so that when juicy SM close combat units assault my tanks I can then charge in on these tightly blobbed up squads and shoot them as they don't count as being locked in combat. In that case they either save the tank if the opponent was unsuccessful in blowing it up or they atleast get some sweet revenge.

Since codices have become as costly as entire games, I don't buy any books for armies I don't own... the only modern ones I have are Astra Militarum and Tau Empire, and Tau don't make especially good allies for Guard. So, I can't offer any specific recommendations for killer combos with Eldar psykers, Inquisitors, etc. I think Yarrick, a Priest and a Psyker in a 50-man blob is a pretty amazing hand-to-hand unit... no allies required. If I were in the market for a fun and fluffy ally, I would probably get an Imperial Assassin. There's probably one that would provide useful support for your army.

A cheap boost you can get from Dark Angel allies is the Power Field generator, available to HQ choices. Its the same points cost as a thunderhammer, or two plasma pistols and it confers a 4+ invulnerable to any models within 3" of the carrier. You can put him in a chimera and the chimera within 3" of another important tank to give it the save as well. As for the Troops choice you could just get a small 5 marine tactical squad with your choice of special/ heavy weapon to suit your list. Remember DA can't access grav weapons (in case you buy a tactical box which has that option in it).

Codex Inquisition lets you do some cool things. I'm partial to the Psyocculum, which gives the inquisitor and it's unit BS 10 against psykers and psychic pilot. Coteaz lets you shoot at things that deep strike near him, and gives access to more psychic powers. A Crusader/Death Cult Assassin Squad in a Land Raider Crusader costs all of the points, but is a pretty awesome melee unit that does work. Non-Unique Inquisitors can buy Servo Skulls, which prevent scouting and infiltrating of enemy units within 12 inches of them, and also reduce your scatter by 1d6 for both deep striking and blast templates within 12 inches of them. They set up before deployment anywhere outside of your enemy's deployment zone. With two basic Inquisitors and six Skulls, you can prevent all scouting and infiltrating on the board, and set up an ordinance kill zone of doom.

Pretty much everything stated above, but you can also get Jokaero for a cheap combination of BS 3 Heavy Flamer/Multi-Melta/Lascannon with a 5++ that can also upgrade it's squads weapons. You can grab plasma guns on karskin-equivs for less than veterean equivalants, although you give up BS 4. Servitors can also provide cheap fire support, but only in the inquisitor's unit. Chimera's can pick up Psybolt weapons so that you can essentially have two AP4 multi-lasers. You can also pick up psykers for the price of a melta gun that can give the inquisition squads cheap prescience.
