I've been thinking of starting a 30k army of the good old XIX Legion for a while now. While my first Legionary love will always be the Iron Warriors, I would be running them as full Mk.III Breacher teams with lots of arty backup.
AKA: Expensive.
Raven Guard, due to the availability of plastic Corvus and a cheap(ish) RG upgrade kit, would be easier on my wallet (may the Emperor have mercy upon it). The plan is to run them as 'Decapitation Strike' drop pod assault using Strike-Captain Alvarex Maun as a base. In a nutshell, he's an 18 inch range walking locator beacon whose pod never scatters, and he lets friendly pods re-roll reserves. This is another cheaper measure, plastic pods, which replace costly artillery batteries and fortifications needed for the IV Legion.
Plus, it supports my local GW, so hey.
The final reason is as a painting project of sorts. It combines three things I need to improve on - black, white, and small details - into one force. So, some imput from you chaps: any recommendations on units to make a semi-decent drop assault force for the Sons of Corax? I've got one or two ideas - namely a Volkite Moritat with some Destroyers, a heavy flamer Dev squad in a pod for pinpoint flame dickery, and perhaps a Contemptor Pod OF DOOOMtm - but everything else is up for debate.

It's nice that you are trying to support your local GW, I'm sure they are great guys there. Still, I would recommend checking out some Chinese knock offs. Your local GW won't have any particular concern for the condition of your wallet.
Why not return their complete lack of concern for your financial status with a complete lack of concern for their financial status?

You have spontaneously mutated into Sir Henry Morgan. Avast there! Swab those decks! Harr-harrr!
@ Wolf - sorry I know nothing about 30k and not too sure if anyone here dabbles in it aside from Kirsten.
40k Raven guard look strong with the scouts ability for most of the army and jump packs are more mobile. Are you planning to use some of the army for 40k as well?
Sounds like an interesting project; at least you'll have a mind-boggling choice; 30k has so many unique vehicles its just a different universe now...

Yes, the army is going to be cross-compatible. I'm running Recon Marines in scout armour just so I can use them as 40k Scouts.

I've tested out the chapter tactics once, with lots of terminators on the board and a couple of outflanking tactical squads. Got another all infantry army being assembled which will be different - much lighter on the initial setup but with a hell of a lot of outflanking tactical squads packing meltaguns/ multimeltas. Mainly I want a couple of the more flexible jump infantry squads.
