Since childhood I've coveted the Realms of Chaos books; Slaves to Darkness and the Lost and the Damned. A friend from school had a copy of both books so I remember seeing them and flicking through the pages.
Now that I can finally look at the contents again, I decided to randomly roll a Chaos warband. These rules are for Rogue Trader 40k, so I still have to generate wargear for the champion/ renegade and their followers.
Since I couldn't decide which god I just rolled a d4 and got Tzeentch.
Warband 1
Renegade champion of Tzeentch - Human Major Hero (Lighter Hand) Chaos attribute - Fast Gift of Tzeentch - Flaming Arm equipment - plasma pistol, disc of Tzeentch, Chaos Armour +1, refractor field, bio scanner, bionic legs
Followers
- 8 humans ; reward; Dominant attribute - Fangs; equipment - boltpistols, autoguns x7, heavy bolter x1, flak armour
- 6 beastmen equipment - chainswords, flamers x5, heavy plasma gun x1, flak armour
-----
That's it so far. I'll need to do more reading to see if the followers get anything else and then generate equipment from the Rogue Trader book.

These sound like fun. Especially to construct...

There are loads of downsides; the overly complex rules, having to convert every single figure and the complete randomness.
At worst you could have a single 'normal' champion with no followers and the mutations/ chaos gifts being a complete hindrance. (e.g. limb loss or part of body shifting to a different location)
It starts getting weird when the mutations start conflicting with each other but in those days the Games Master would be the arbiter for any unusual results.
At least the D1000 charts are quite novel.
I've still not rolled anything like the CSM model I was intending to use as a champion; could take all eternity to roll the right results.

This sounds pretty interesting. I'm down for playing some games with this. Maybe some standard ones and some Chaos Warbands vs Imperial Guard Last Chancers style penal squads.

It's interesting to roll the chaos warbands up but I don't think they'll be evenly matched.
If one player gets 2 retinues of beastmen with graviton guns and a D-Cannon and the other rolls an armless, headless chaos champion dude, even with Chaos Armour +3 it'll just be a firing squad.
The chaos boon/ mutation charts are certainly interesting.. There is another simpler mutation chart in the original RT rulebook for 1st edition 40k. We could adapt them into a combat patrol style chaos forces; that would be good. You already have a nurgley chaos collection.

The game is basically run by a gamemaster, right? The GM could simply declare that a character based on your figure, or an appropriate opponent, is present?

Yeah the RoC books were around in the late 80s; around the same time as Warhammer 3rd edition and Rogue Trader, so there are sections in the book for both systems. Fantasy & 40k were also interchangeable.
e.g. you could get 'feral world squats' which were just fantasy dwarves.
In fact when I was a kid I took part in a messaround participation game in GW Hammersmith where my Tilean crossbowmen were involved in a 40k siege but they did nothing but hide a corner, avoiding the special minefields....
Yeah; the GM can allow any model to represent your champion but I've seen some keen 'Oldhammer' sites where people really try to give their Chaos champion life by making them resemble the random rolls.
