Hi!
I played this game back in the early 90's and when steam offered this for only a few quid I had to grab it.
I played the first mission fine, saved the game and went off to work
...
now, every time I try to play it has weird red lines and fuzz everywhere, this seems to have happened to a few others who I have read about on t'interweb though none has provided me with a "what ya gotta do is" kind of answer.
I have restart, re-downloaded and reinstalled at least twice, I have updates graphics drivers and checked everything is okay, I re-ran the direct X thingy too.
Anyone got any ideas?
If it can be fixed we can multiplayer too!

are you using sli / crossfire? I had to switch sli off and performance went right up with no other graphical issues. im assuming you mean the x com game that came out a couple of years back?

Well it would be in your graphics driver software not the game itself, I know nvidia cards use nvidia control panel, never used amd cards.

Thanks!

you will not have sli then, it requires 2 independent graphics cards.

Just got XCOM: Enemy Within literally two days ago, and I'm having trouble putting it down. Not that I mind - it's an excellent game, and something I've been seeking for a long time in the strategy game genre.
In my current saved game, I had a really rough start, since my troops' mortality rate seemed to increase as they got promoted, to the point where making Lieutenant was practically a death sentence. Team after team kept getting wiped, and the only thing I had going for me was that every new team was getting better equipment than the last one.
Anyway, a few tales of awesome: First, there's my second covert ops extraction mission. So, the operative I sent to find the EXALT cell was a rookie with an unupgraded pistol. I didn't expect anything of her, since in my last mission, it was the extraction team that did all the work. During her investigation, I lost my top squad to a Chryssalid infestation in Newfoundland, and so all I had left to rescue her was my one veteran who missed out on the Newfoundland massacre mission, and four rookies. It was the mission where you're supposed to protect the encoder, although it was a mission I hadn't quite figured out at the time. Anyway, the extraction team gets wiped out to a man, and I lose the encoder. With EXALT agents descending (sometimes literally) on the transmitter, I send my rookie with a pistol down to stop them and hold out for as long as she could before dying horribly and losing the mission for me, because I can't abort the mission.
What ended up happening was that despite being outnumbered 6-to-1 by troops that had every possible advantage on her, she ended up winning the mission for me, pretty much entirely because none of them could land a hit on her for the 20 or so turns that it lasted for. Point-blank assault rifle fire, snipers on the roof, nothing worked. Although she only got promoted to Squaddie (she deserved to make Sergeant with that one, honestly), she ended the mission with 7 out of the 16 kills made that day awarded to her, and in recognition for that act of sheer awesome I put enough ribbons on her chest to open up a gift shop. Too bad she got killed by a car explosion in a later mission.
My current top squad is the one that I plan to use to make my second attempt to take out the alien base. I'm finally building up an experience base that's on par with my available technology, and it's kinda scary how well they work together. We're talking Atlas armor, combat rigging so I can take nanotube vests AND equipment (advanced medkits for the Support guys, everyone else gets advanced SCOPEs), and plasma weapons for everyone except the Assault troops, who get Alloy Cannons. I have a Major leading the squad (an Assault trooper nicknamed "Android," who as a rookie point-blank critical hit a Cyberdisc with a plasma rifle for 12 damage, and then chased the damn thing down for the kill. Now, she one-shots Berserkers with an Alloy Cannon without blinking an eye), and I have a couple Sergeant-level Support guys handling the medkit dispersal, two Heavies that have a penchant for blowing the hell out of everything except their targets, and another Assault gal called "Freestyle" who mostly follows Android's lead with the "get within 4 squares of the target and blow them apart with an Alloy Cannon" thing.
Despite my horrendous casualty rate, I feel completely comfortable with saying that this game is freaking awesome.

I haven't played EW yet though I have it. There is a cool mod call the Long War that they are making for it. I really wanted X-com to be more X-Comy. Xenonauts is worth a look if you like the genre. It is more of a direct X-com sequel.
However both games are pretty great in their own style.
