Planet History (brief): Still WiP
Terrain:
Terrak’s 21 Island continents are divided by harsh, unforgiving seas, with cross currents that can drag a ship under the surface in seconds and waves that could smother cities. Deadly storms can appear out of the calmest skies in minutes and the unpredictable tides and rough swell make navigating near the shore suicidal at best.
The Islands themselves thrust out of the seas like giant plateaus, each one surrounded by sheer vertical cliffs, rising over 300 meters on average. The islands themselves are covered in vast swathes of rolling grassland around the edges, as you continue further inland the grassland gives way to light bushland before turning into dark and brooding forests that surround the central mountainous cores. These mountains are the now dormant remains of the huge super volcanoes that formed the islands in the first place. Vast lakes and rivers cover the islands, fed from the snow capped mountains, amazing pure springs and rainfall. These lakes and rivers eventually find their way into the sea, forming spectacular waterfalls as they cascade down the sides of the plateaus.
Points of Interest:
The Graveyard: The Graveyard is a wasteland of ruined hab blocks and twisted girders, once three of Old Terrak’s hive cities they are now the premier training ground for the PDF, off world regimental reinforcements and newly founded Terrakan regiments. It is in these rusting, apocalyptic wastelands that the Terrakans learn the art of city warfare, engaging in month long wargames with other regiments. While the games use training rounds, deaths are common, unexploded ordinance, collapsing buildings, sickness and accidents all lead to a more “realistic” training experience, giving recruits a real feel for the horrors of urban warfare and tempering them for the trail ahead of them.
The Citadel Cities: Terrak has 17 great cities, each one sitting astride the mountains of their own plateau continent. At the heart of each city is the Schola Progenium fortress, huge, intimidating buildings that cover hundreds of square kilometres with great training halls, drill grounds, garrison barracks and vast defensive curtain walls. At the heart of these great buildings are great geothermal generators, drawing power from the dormant volcanoes that are the Schola’s foundations, these generators provide all the power for the city that encircles it as well as the many defence sites.
Alongside these massive edifices are the ground to orbit defence silos, space port and airbase, Titan hangers and the PDF garrisons, each one a sprawling fortress in their own right. All of these key locations are separated from the surrounding city by a 200 meter wide moat, crossed by multiple fortified bridges. In the event of a siege, these bridges can be raised cutting off access to the fortresses.
The city itself is also a heavily fortified construction, surrounded by high curtain walls, each consecutive ring of buildings rises in height by at least one floor from those in the outer ring allowing defenders to keep a height advantage and denying attackers any vantage points. Roads and highways have all been meticulously planned out to turn certain areas into kill zones and removing any chance of hidden flanking movements by attacking forces. Parks and public squares quickly become killing grounds and forward landing bases and all important public utility hubs are located in the heart of the city.
The Founding Fields: The founding fields take up an entire island continent, the rolling grassland is covered in huge ferrocrete landing pads, hangers, supply bunkers and blast proof garrison shelters. At its heart lies the massive founding halls capable of holding millions of men waiting for deployment. One section of the fields is reserved for the Quick Reaction Force (QRF) a force of 5 PDF regiments, 1 of which is armoured, 3 Imperial Guard regiments, a contingent of Imperial Knights, a maniple of Titans and 2 regiments of Skitarii as well as support elements. These forces are kept on full alert ready to respond to any threat that presents itself in the System, the QRF is designed to hold and contain any threat, allowing further forces to be assembled and deployed to the hotzone., A trio of light cruisers and 2 bulk transporters sit on the pads, converted to hold and deploy the QRF as fast as possible.
Native Fauna: The most unique aspect of Terrak is its wide range of exotic fauna. Terrak’s entire animal kingdom is a derivative of the Canidae Genus, from bird like creatures, to the more well known dogs of old Earth and even fish. It is believed that the original colonists, who settled Terrak some time before or during the Golden Age of Technology worshipped the Canine to the extreme. Using gene splicing and cloning technology along with other, now lost techniques, the people of Terrak built an entire animal kingdom, even the insects share the Canidae Genus.
As a result, the Canine forms a major part of everyday life for all Terrakans, all of the oldest families have canine patron animals and every child is gifted at least 2 animals when they are born. Due to Terraks classification as a Fortress world, it is not surprising that the canine has followed the Terrakans into nearly all aspects of military life, they are used as draught animals, trackers, munitions detection, life guards, attack beasts and even mounts for Terrakan cavalry formations.
The final link in Terraks fauna chain, and the most infamous are the Hounds, or Homo Sapiens Canidaeus. Some believe that the Hounds are the descendents of the original settlers, those who took their love of the canine to the next level, gene splicing themselves with the Canidae genus, other say that they were created as servants and soldiers, the latter task they perform with exemplary skill and tenacity. One of the few Imperial sanctioned abhuman species, they resemble humans, but are covered in varying lengths and colours of fur, have slightly elongated faces, large sharp teeth and claw like fingertips. Some “Tribes,” as they call themselves have reversed knees and others have been known to sport tails or pointed ears.
Culture: All Terrakans have but a single purpose, to fight for the God Emperor. Their system guards the only access into the heavily populated and strategically important Katar Sub-Sector. As a result every child is destined for military service, from birth they are schooled in war, starting at the age of 10 they are inducted into the youth armies and begin their training at the Schola Halls. Due to their harsh training regime, belief in their own abilities, and long standing history as elite soldiers, Terrakans are often described as arrogant, cocksure and stubborn. Those that serve alongside them describe them as steadfast, loyal and stubborn to a fault, with a strong mischievous streak that can push the boundaries with their many Commissars to the limit.
Terrakans have an ingrained hatred of leaving a job half finished, many times refusing to leave until the task at hand is finished to their exacting standards. This has brought them into conflict with officers of other regiments, and command staff on multiple occasions, refusing orders to retreat, skip secondary objectives or to speed up their attacks. Even so the rolls of great deeds, victories and battle honours proves their loyalty and skill and shows that their tenacity is well earned.
Terrakans care little for the gathering of personal achievement, rather they take great pride in the achievement of the group, be it a squad, or a regiment, a work team or a repair crew, the team always comes first. This leads to fantastic camaraderie, team cohesion and also a lot of friendly competition, individual squads will strive to outdo each other, but will always have the need of the platoon and company in mind.
Religion: Terrakans are fierce followers of the warlike Imperial Creed, taught to them by the Drill abbots of the Schola Progenium. They are taught to love the Emperor and to show their dedication in the defence of His realms and His people. Surprisingly they are not avid church goers nor are the prone to prayer or sermons, instead they show their faith and purpose in combat, letting the rifles crack and blades sing do the praying for them.
Physiology: Terrakans have no real “typical” look. Due to the constant stream of Progena orphans, off world Imperial Guard, Imperial Navy, Adeptus Mechanicus garrison regiments and the constant stream of trade vessels Terrakans are a mixed breed, showing typical traits of Katarn, Sellovian, Rojharn, Arkadian, Taalite and many, many others. This range of peoples and the straight forward military style of their culture allows Terrakans to adapt to off world cultural differences with very little trouble.
"When looking across open ground into the eyes of death, we do not shudder, we do not cower, we smile. For there is no greater honour than to fight for the Emperor, the Golden Throne and the Imperium. We will not die tonight men, nor will we die tomorrow, for in this fight we become immortal in the pages of history as the protectors of the Imperium, the guardians of mankind, and the Victors of this challenge! Steel yourselves and prepare to engage!"
