I have a winter themed imperial guard army that is getting to a nice size now. Could always do with more of everything but that's imperial guard for ya. I am looking to maybe get some allies I know that dark angels and grey knights work well as allies because of their specialist deep striking abilities. But I love the look of the space wolves and think they would look beautiful with my army, but I don't know much about them and don't want to spend the cost of a codex to find out if they are any good. Could any body tell me abit about them and if they alli well with the guard. Cheers.

space wolf codex reviewI'd recommend reading that article and pretty much anything else of note on that site. Space Wolves are close combat specialists. The basic squads have access to a couple of extra power weapons/ power fists if you want them. A lot of models have access to storm shields. The 3++ invulnerable save that stormshields offer are essential for the more expensive close combat specialist units. Terminator armoured wolf guard can take stormshields for free if they sacrifice the power weapon, thunderwolves have to pay. If you take them as a Combined Arms Detachment then you have to take 2 HQs and 2 Troops minimum, so they are a bit character heavy. To get around the cost of taking 2 characters they have cheaper 2 wound characters called 'wolf guard battle leaders', which are well worth considering. They differ from other space marines in a few minor ways; the scouts are veterans, the blood claws (in power armour) are the novices/ youths, they have Fenrisian wolf packs as a beastly FA choice (these are nice and cheap but have pants leadership), thunderwolves, characters mounted on thundrewolves, the stormfang flier and now the new flier and the dreadnoughts have access to Helfrost weapons but they have no grav weapons, unlike the regular SM.

to be honest, if you like the look of an army then go for it.
the rules will change over the years but your love of the models won't.

Yeah; and to add to that with Space Wolves and the vast range of marine kits available now you have the choice to make them as wolfy as you want. There is even a new shoulder pad/ general part sprue, say if you want them plain, without many wolf pelts, just go for the normal tactical squads and the new shoulder pads. If you want them covered in pelts, runes and swords just get the Space Wolf Pack kit.

Thanks guys all really helpful and your right it is all about the look at the end of the day. If we wanted to win we would of gone for space marines to start with.
