I don't know if I'm just seeing things but when I look at the sponsons on a predator or Land Raider they look like they could "fold" into and out of the side of the hull. Fluff wise, is this what they actually do? Or is it a fact that if they're fitted, they're hanging out all the time?
Just to clarify ... I know that on a model, if it's got the upgrade then the sponson part is assembled and stuck on the side of the hull. Often for eternity. But if there was a real Predator in my back garden, would the sponsons be able to deploy and retract from the side of the hull ?
Has anyone read anything anywhere that could substantiate this ?

As far as I know, the sponsons can't do that fluffwise. There may be some capability to add and remove the sponsons from the vehicle once it's back in the space marine motor pool, but it would probably be a long, complex thing involving lots of chanting and incense as to avoid offending the machine spirit with the modifications. I'd hazard a guess that it's even more remote for Land Raiders, which are ancient and reveared, and swapping sponsons would probably involve tearing out large chunks of the interior for ammunition and power packs.

If I recall correctly, a predator crew is 3, but it might be four. I can check when I get off work. If I recall correctly, the sponsons are not manually handled by separate gunners, like in a Leman Russ. They're controlled remotely by the crew. Think of them like a CROWS system.

Cheers Mate, that'll be good of you if you could let me know. Yes ... the CROWS System ... I know what that is.
(well I do now that I've googled it).

According to Imperial Armor, the crew is just a driver and a gunner (the normal Rhino is just a driver). This makes sense to some extent, since the Marines usually have the most advanced vehicles, so things like autoloaders and complex machine spirits beyond what the Guard has access to would explain it. I'd still think they'd have a vehicle commander, but I guess not. Now prepare for a fact you probably don't care about! Rhinos not used by the Astartes don't have the same goodies. Arbites Rhinos, for example, require a driver and co-driver/gunner/vehicle commander.

Yep, a two man crew, that has surprised me as there are two hatches on top of the hull. Maybe the second hatch is for a school leaver on work experience.
The Arbites crew seems to be a bit more realistic. NATO tanks usually have a loader/Rad Op too but I guess you don't need one of those if the Predator has Lascannons.
Just put new batteries in right ?
Cheers fro looking that up for me fella.

One of the turret assembly options is to turn that hatch in to a mounting for a storm bolter (which is normally what I do), but yeah, I was a little surprised. On the other hand, dropping the crew of a Rhino down from two to one frees up, what, 40 marines, just from the tac squad rhinos for the 2nd to 6th companies? It's understandable.

I just don't know hoe the poor guy is meant to drive the thing and fire the storm bolter.
