Lists: We were using a somewhat relaxed but not fully unbound approach to picking the lists. Actually my guard list was using a lazy approach since I just added a Leman Russ and Yellow Squad to the last list I used to make up the points. I forgot that Waaagh! Purgis' profile already gave him a warlord trait (that lets chaos and ork factions fight as close allies) and so I let my sister pick between the Chaos, Ork and BRB tables for warlord traits. She picked Chaos and got Hatred Incarnate which meant that in addition to being fearless any unit he joined would have Hatred: Everyone, pretty sick combo on a nigh unstoppable beast of an H.Q but also pretty hilarious. Papa Nurgle didn't seem to be too keen on handing out much more in the way of putrid candy though, the plague marine champion got nothing from the chaos boons chart, and neither did the Dark Vengeance Chaos Lord, who was named Stag Thruster and gained the title of Unworthy. The winged Demon Prince was blessed with +1 bs but had no shooting attacks. Waaagh! Purgis chose to roll for his psychic powers on the Ork table and gained Power Vomit which pleased my sister greatly (there was much cackling). I rolled on the AM warlord table for Captain Testless who gained Master of Command
Mission and deployment: We opted for Maelstrom, because random objectives are hilarious, and rolled Deadlock.
Set Up: The forces of darkness won the roll to setup first and took the fortified hill so that I couldn't have it. This gave us the narrative of the Ork and Chaos commander having taken a key part of the Imperial lines, and trying to use that to collapse them. The Imperial forces meanwhile respond to this as an opportunity to take out the key leaders of the forces of darkness. Time is running out for both sides and to the winner the spoils.
The Salian assault force deployed in the ruined supply depot opposite. The CCS opted to start the game in reserve aboard the Vendetta.
I'll just take a moment to mention the Ork warlord Waaagh! Purgis. He was once an aspiring nob who was trying to be the biggest he could be. When the Warboss Lemon Steela's stole the Armchair of Questionable Fluidstm from Cheminhaler's Soul Drinkers he sat in the chair and made a demonic pact with one of Papa Nurgle's demons which offered him one wish if he would be its host and release it from the armchair which had held it bound for millennia. His wish was simple "I wanna be big!" And so he was. Wielding the powers of a warboss in mega armour and a deamon prince psyker he is a pretty formidable homebrew character, he also has It Will Not Die. He and the Big Mek with the KFF were attached to the nobs meaning that the whole unit benefited from a 5+ invulnerable save, were fearless and hated everything, she thought about sticking the Painboy in there too but he got attached to the fancy 'ard boyz on the hill.
Turn 1: The Orks advanced cautiously, the winged demon prince skirted the forest and the Plague Marines followed, to claim back the armchair objective. The 'ard boyz took the fortified hill, moving up to the barricade and the gretchin scurried up to the chapel, no doubt looking for somewhere to both hide and defecate in. Stag Thruster and the Chaos Space Marine squads held back expecting the guard to come to them in order to take the objectives in the Ork back field.
The guard didn't advance too much. Yellow Squad moved towards the forest and Black Squad 1 shuffled around the hill a little trying to space out the guard line and set up a flanking move. Red Platoon Command raced to box of bitz objective in their Taurox, securing it for 1VP, they also triggered my behind the lines objective but because it was only two units I only scored 1VP for that too In the shooting phase The guard mostly fired on the Winged Demon Prince reducing it to one wound but failing to get the kill due to it's mark of Nurgle and power armour. The units that couldn't see the prince failed to do much to the targets they had killing off a single space marine and a couple of Orks.
Turn 2: The Boyz on the hill held in place and fired, killing a couple of guard, as did the Chaos Marines while the grots hid in the chapel. Both Ork dakkajets showed up ready to hose down the guard, one wiping out the autocannon squad and the other slaughtering the lascannon teams in the depot ruins. The Nobz advanced and the Plague Marines killed a few soldiers form Yellow Squad as the Prince moved in close enough to charge. As I rolled for my overwatch I consoled myself that at least I had a melta and a plasma pistol in the unit...
...but they proved useless since before I rolled to fire them I landed a lucky lasgun hit which rolled a six to wound and the prince rolled a one for its save, the beast was vanquished.
Not wanting to test their luck any further I pulled Yellow Squad back, effectively conceding the forest to the Plague Marines. This turn Guard fire was concentrated on the nigh unstopable Nobz led by Waagh! Purgis and the Big Mek but despite their forcefield they were all reduced to pulp. Purgis himself took one wound leaving him with 3 more (assuming he didn't regenerate it) and temporarily disrupting his psychic focus. The Plague Marines were also targeted as I tried to destroy them before they could get cover from the forest, four were killed but being fearless they didn't give a pealed pustule about their losses. Finally one of the Dakkajets took a serious number of hits from the Leman Russ Punisher, but it mostly saved itself through jinks losing only one hull point.
Turn 3:
The Ork movement was slowed by various difficult terrain pieces, the Boyz were slowed down to a crawl trying to jump the barricades and the Plague Marines got a bit stuck in the forest however they did secure the armchair and more importantly gained cover against incoming tank shells. The Gretchin finally stopped squabbling over the chapel door and were all pushed inside by their Runtherd. In the shooting phase Black Squad 1 was finally annihilated by the Chaos bolters on the hill. Purgis continued to advance though now the beast was alone.
Now the guard struck back moving up aggressively with Hellhounds and Chimera hoping to take advantage of the boyz on the hill being clustered by their low run move. Sadly I was about 3 inches too far away to really do damage with the inferno cannons, and to make matters worse the basilisks were largely off target. But the real prize went to the painboy who was passing out strange tasting pill like no ones business, cutting losses by about two thirds. To make matters worse one of the Hellhounds immobilised itself on a tank trap.
You might be looking at this picture and thinking I'd gone nuts trying to advance like that but at this point the Orks had an almost unmatchable lead on points and I'd only be able to win if I either tabled them or simultaneously held every objective for the Domination mission which was worth D3+3 victory points. So clearing the backfield seemed like a top priority... if only the inferno cannons had been a few inches closer :/
On the plus side one of the tank shells had been so off target from the boyz it had landed on Stag Thruster and his lacklustre retinue of marines, killing all but the unworthy lord and one minion.
The Vendetta had also shown up this turn and it wasted no time in targeting the undamaged dakka jet. Annoyingly its jinks saved it from two of the three lascannon penetrations the one that went through immobilised the jet but that was saved too, changing the result to crew stunned!
The Orks were begining to dwindle and the Imperial lines were holding.
And of course since the Vendetta had shown up Captain Testless had arrived.
Turn 4:
But Turn 4 was where things were about to get rough. The deffkoptas auto arrived and showed up on just the right side, swooping in behind the basilisks .
And now that the humans had so brazenly advanced Purgis and the boyz were also in a position to charge.
Unsurprisingly both Hellhounds and one of the Chimera were eliminated by the assault. The other Chimera in the centre was whittled down and wrecked by dakkajet fire and the basilisks were roughed up by the Deffkoptas (one took a weapon destroyed but only lost its bolter, the other was immobilised.)
The sacrifice of the guard armour had however been enough to lure the 'ard boyz in for a second flaming from Bronze Command who were able to score 26 hits on the Orks...
... which took down 3 of them (Even getting their 4+ armour saves and FNP that feels really low...)
Testless and the Vendetta raced overhead to secure the back field objectives and route out the Orks and Chaos scum there.
And the Red Squads disembarked to join the chimera in laying down a withering hail of lasfire on the deffkoptas, they only downed one but the foul xenos failed leadership and fell back.
Turn 5:
Purigs began to advance to the next line of guardsmen, still at three wounds. And the remaining plague marine advanced on Yellow Squad. (I think the other two died from sustained cannon fire from the Punisher and Taurox.)
Shockingly Bronze Platoon Command were charged by the 'ard boyz. Overwatch and combat saw two more Orks die but the Salian squad was wiped out.
The Plague Marine charged Yellow Squad but the combat was a draw.
And the Deffkoptas rallied.
The guard turn was all about trying to stop Purgis and if possible table the Orks.
It was mostly attrition but the Vendetta killed the Chaos lord and half the gretchin were slagged by the Astropath's psychic scream.
And the Orks endured.
Which left the combat between the three remaining members of Yellow Squad and the Plague Marine. The Marine killed two of the valiant guard but don't forget there was still that heroic lasgunner who had taken down a demon prince, and as it happened a Plague Marine isn't much compared to that. The heroic Salian tore apart his moulding opponent, his shining bayonet clearly guided by the Emperor, burning the twisted guts of the traitor and winning the combat.
Turn 6:
Purgis had been reduced to one wound in the previous turn but he had finally reached the guard's main line, their last line. He began his slaughter with a blech of foul power vomit, melting most of Red Squad 2. Then he charged and blew up their Chimera killing a couple more of the hapless squad in the blast.
The Deffkoptas swooped in deciding that the demon killing guardsman was the fightiest they pumped their missiles into him until he vanished into the dust. While on the other side of the table one of the Dakkajets fired its gins into the Company Command Squad, killing everyone but the Astropath. (I had thought that Captain Testless had survived too, he passed all but one save and a bunch of look out sirs. But sadly I remembered that the Dakkajet guns are S6 which was instant death.)
In the Imperial turn the Leman Russ Punisher destroyed the Deffkoptas and the Leman Russ Battle Tank finally killed off Waaagh! Purgis. The Vendetta brought vengeance to the the Dakkajet, gunning it down.
The 'ard boyz weathered more fire, losing the Painboy first and then being reduced to a single model (who passed leadership).
This left the Orks with a big lead on points. But with only 4 Gretchin and a Runtherd, a damaged dakkajet and a single boy. However the game ended on turn 6 meaning:
