So, I've been playing for about a year properly, and although I can hold my own most of the time and grind out a win or a close battle at least, I struggle with a few things.
They may end up just being things you get with experience, but perhaps some wise old-hands have some advice?
Reserves
I can never decide on what to reserve or not. Do you have any units that you Always reserve/start on the board? Does it depend on the objectives?
I chop and change between Mech & Gunline lists depending on how I feel, but I do struggle to decide and sometimes post-match feel like I reserved too much. Sometimes I put a LR in reserve so it doesn't take all the first turn fire and blow up straight away. Then think I should've had it on the ground at start to get some early kills. Same with Mounted Vets.
Who do you deploy where?
Do you sit longrange Russes up on high ground, even though the terrain may be sparse, so that you can practically land a blast anywhere on the table? Or do you hide them behind a wall with just direct lines of fire?
Are the short-range tanks your vanguard units that mean the opponent prioritising them over others, or do you bubble wrap them and edge them forward?
Do assault blobs (or their intention) form a row infront of everyone? how about HW Infsqds or HWS?
Movement
So particularly with Chimeras - Do you zip them up 12inches and sacrifice the snapshots for early turns in order to get ground control? Or like me do you generally trundle them up the field 6" a time and accept the enemy will be faster anyway but the better chance of hitting should get some kills. Same with Russes?
Who are you main sacrificial lambs that you move out into the open, and who do you hug cover with?
When do you go to ground, when don't you? I never go to ground, partly because I forget, but also because I want to keep them shooting!
Which orders are your go to orders at the moment? Mine seem to be FrfSrf (if I've got a chance of getting wounds/still have enough lasguns for it to be worth it); MoveMoveMove/For the Emperor; and Bring it Down.
What targets are you priority for shooting? Landspeeders that can zip around and win every objective, or the drop podding meltas/assault units infront of you, or even the HeavySupport/Transports.
I literally dread the assault phase. I think that's partly because i still haven't got my head round it, and also because I can never get the unit i want, to successfully get into assault with the target i want. I also know that almost everything else is going to hit (kill) me first so should I just fire lasguns at them and hope to whittle them down before they get me??
There's a lot up there, I know. So I'm not asking all of you to answer every question.. Just attempting to get some friendly advice to help enjoy my hobby a bit more!
