Good for you, Reds! Just got back from a three-day weekend in Naples,FL. It was OK, a nice change of pace. There was a nice zoo, and a volunteer-run milhist museum in the local airport. I talked to a ninety-something man who had served aboard the battleship USS Arkansas for five years. The exhibits were pretty much a smorgasbord of donated materials, something of everything but fairly well organized and labeled. I particularly liked the GI Joes with scratchbuilt vehicles, including a Vietnam M113 ACAV and some great Western Desert WWII vehicles; and a collection of toy soldiers of many historical periods, including a nice Rorke's Drift diorama. Lots of medals, uniforms, flags and models. Also had a long conversation with one of the airport staff, a former CAP pilot who was briefly drafted (!) into Desert Storm to ferry aircraft.
Also found a nice game shop and picked up the FATE Accelerated and Kobolds Ate My Baby! RPGs. There were fantasy maps built into the game tables and a cozy private gaming room for roleplaying in.
I loved the drive along Tamiami Trail thru the Everglades and Big Cypress (for one thing it wasn't crowded). Found an enormous (three-inch) lubber grasshopper in an outhouse -- was told by zoo staff who spotted my sketch that the only things that can eat them are shrikes, which mount them on thorns to dry before eating what would otherwise be poisonous and bitter.

@jen: If you ever get a computer that would handle it, you really should play the Wargame series. It's Cold War Geek Heaven.
Also, hurray, two pages of New Today!

Today II finished painting my knight. I'm actually rather pleased, may have to force my housemate to get the lights out and take some photos. The weathering on it is probably the best I have ever done: gold trim looks so nice with a sponging of Skavenblight Dinge.
Took it in for a game; it was the first week of a map campaign at my store. It ended up stuck in combat against hormagants and the Swarmlord, although it killed them all after four turns. Ended up winning 10-7 on kill points. The campaign looks like it could be decent, the rules are heavily influenced by The Settlers of Catan. They even have a large Planetary Empires board, with each player represented with one of their models. I'm going to have to take the commissar in.

Someone called me a Nazi at work today. An ambiguously-30s guy was upset that I needed to scan his ID for a pack of cigarettes (if I didn't, and it was a random process test, I'd be fired on the spot for not carding him), and muttered, "Gestapo" under his breath after doing as I asked.
Had discretion not prevailed, I would have thanked him for his comment on my competence, but told him that we were Stazi instead.
I've been called names by customers before, but "Nazi" is a new one. Must be the thousand years of Viking ancestry in me...

Today, which marks the day that I have been infesting this stinking mud-ball planet known as Erff for 41 years, has been most awesome: Trigger time with friends at the range, followed by them buying me lunch; then cigars/pipes, beer, and good conversation. Plus I gained another Birthday Twin when a friend of a friend who was planning to have her daughter introduced to the world via Caesarean section on the 19th had her plans disrupted by the daughter deciding that she wanted out of the womb this morning. Well done, Humanity. My plans to deploy Exterminatus have been pushed back another year...

Today I learned there is going to be a Total War: Warhammer game.

On one hand, it will likely be terrible, as CA are kind of terrible.
I played Rome 2. I thought they'd learned from EB, with the softer colour palette, Agranians finally being there (whoop!), heavier focus on irregulars, better economy and heavier focus on logistics. And then
fornicateING IMITATION LEGIONAIRES? NO. DID NOT EXIST. CALLED "THORAKITI". NOT IMITATION, ANY MORE THAN LEGION IS "IMITATION PELTAST", IMBECILE. ORGANIC, SEPARATE EVOLUTION OF HEAVY SKIRMISHER/MEDIUM INFANTRY CONCEPT FROM GALLIC INVASION, IPHCRATEAN REFORMS AND POST-SUCCESSOR WARFARE. fornicate YOU AND YOUR PREPAYMENT METER WITH YOUR fornicateING SAD OBSESSION WITH ROME, fornicateING IDIOT GLADIATOR TROOPS, AND YOUR IGNORING THE MASSIVE RICHNESS OF THE PRE-MARIAN ERA TO FOCUS ON LEGION RESKINS AND THE COMPLETELY OTTF LORICA SEGMENTA.
Also, your DLC is vile.
Also, computer will not install medieval II properly. Cannot install Europa Baraborum II. Fuel wrath further.
On other hand, WHFB is pretty unrealistic and insane anyway, so this may be really cool. Plus, cheaper than building Cathayan Army for WHFB. And may be the only lasting legacy of WHFB as it, you know, actually is. Plus, Battlefleet Gothic!

I think WHFB is a good fit with the current Total War system, precisely because liberties can be taken due to it's craziness and general fantasy settings. I do expect swarms of faction and sub faction DLCs, though, and I'm sure they'll make some utterly bone-headed changes to the game mechanics for no reason, like Rome II's enormous and intrusive UI. Honestly, Shogun 2 and Fall of the Samurai are sort of the apex of Total War games to me. Rome II was dissapointing, and the Atilla expansion, while better, still falls a bit flat.
