Hey everyone, I've been playing around with this unit a bit to try and find a good use for these beasts. The idea is to use them as mobile cover and a defensive assault unit to protect more high value targets. Their high toughness and slightly higher armour saves let them take a licking and can even draw fire away from higher threat units.
Unit composition:
For the make up of this unit I suggest to take a unit of five Bulgryns, two of which will be upgraded to have power mauls and brute shields. Also bring two ministourm priests as their war hymns are amazing. The last two units are optional being the Lord Commisar and a Primaris Psyker. I recommend bringing a Lord Commisar with a power fist and the deathmask of ollanius. This gives the unit some AP 2 and makes the Commisar much more survivable. Lastly is the Primaris Psyker who I'd suggest you roll on biomancy with to try and get endurance. I would suggest only taking either the Lord Commisar or the Primaris Psyker and not both because the LC will execute the Primaris the first perils you roll.
So your unit should look something like this:
2x bulgryns with brute shied and power maul
3x bulgryns with slab shield and grenader gauntlet
2x ministourm priests
1x lord commisar with power fist and deathmask of ollanius (optional)
1x Primaris Psyker mastery level 2 with biomancy (optional )
The Role:
As I said earlier this unit is here to act as mobile defence and assault protection for high value targets. So in saying that you need to know what you are playing against. This unit wil either be soaking fire for your tanks or covering them, so in either case you need to make sure your three slab shields are in base to base contact with each other. This way they will be making a wall for your vehicles to hide behind and be granted a 4+ cover save. Next you need to know what is shooting at them. If you know they will be taking lots of heat from AP3 and less your brute shields need to be in front so their invuls can hopefully tank the saves. If it is anything AP4 or higher let the slab shields take the saves as they will have a 3+ if in base to base contact.
For the cover to be effective, you will need to make sure that you always end your turn with the slab shields makeing a wall directly in front of the vehicle. This does not always mean end of the movement phase. Remember that all units get the +1 cover save from the shields not just yours so you will need to move them out of the way in the movement phase then run them back into place in the shooting phase. Or move then assault and hopefully consolidate back into place.
For your assault defence to work well you must also pick your targets wisely. Bulgryns are tough but in no way a dedicated assault unit. Don't charge into units unless either you know you can beat them and they are a threat to your vehicle, or you know that next turn your vehicle will be charged and the Bulgryns can keep it alive for at least one more turn. So units you will almost always want to charge are melta squads (including units with melta bombs or haywire grenades) or similar threats. Only charge units like terminators with hammers or fists if you know your vehicle is going to be assaulted and destroyed if you don't.
Hopefully this tactic is useful to you too
