So I live in an area where the game is not only alive and well but actually thriving. My local gw plays host to probably the most active lord of the rings group in the world (multiple games a week on the most stunning homemade terrain). As such I've decided to dust off my old collection of models that I had painted in my preteen-early teen years, strip them all and repaint/trade them to try and get a gondor and Rohan army going. I have a long road ahead of me before I get to any actual games but I was wondering if any of you fine people have had an experience with either of these armies or even the game itself and could lend some aid.

There used to be a LoTR section just above the 'Gaming' section but it was deleted due to inactivity.
I've changed stores too many times to notice trends but this is usually because some stores get closed and new ones open. Brent Cross GW used to have a lot of Fantasy, 40k and BFG games back in the day but never noticed anywhere playing a lot of Hobbit or LotR.
Actually I bought a handful of the Orcs but wasn't really overly impressed with the kits and having to learn an entirely different ruleset so it was a bad impulse purchase, years ago.

I know the system is dead/hanging on by a thread most places. But the Springfield store in Virginia plays host to a huge community of hobbit players from all over the dc, nova, and southern Maryland area. The guy who actually runs the events leads a really cool website for it. Everytime I'm at the store (not including right now since the tables are all empty) there is a battle going on.

Sounds good; as long as you have a regular source of opponents.
Rohan is probably one of my favourite regular human armies in the setting, being so cavalry heavy. I think if I was doing the 'good guys' I'd probably go for dwarves or hobbits, keeping the army small by using special characters. It's surprising how expensive the characters are in the game; it shows how much the game is character driven.
