So I played a fun game with the most competitive and effective player in my area. lol, I believe it's safe to say it was his fastest and most devastating win to date. He came at me with two squads of warriors on the field two more deployed in two ghost arcs, a lord attached to some immortals I believe and all sorts of scarabs of various shapes and sizes.. tome spiders, I'm sure you can imagine. And a couple different squads of wraths. So turn one I botch my orders, now realizing that statistically I should have given all of the CCS's orders because they are less likely to fail. One of my PCS officers rolled double 6's and that's the end of that. I got off a couple "Fire on my target" and others but it didn't help. I rush him on one flank with a suicide infantry blob to meat wall for my lemans russ & chimera. I fire everything they have at a ghost arc and don't even scratch the paint. infantry blob two and my sentinel fire all of my heavy stuff at the 2nd ghost arc aaaand didn't even scratch the paint, all my HK missiles fired and miss all my laz cannons all my krak missiles to zero effect what so ever on the ghost arcs.... The emperor has abandoned us! Turn two he decimates my ranks with fire and the most effective thing I do all game is send my PCS to ground kissing their asses goodbye... and it worked, until the assault. In the assault he puts over 50% of my troops into the meat pie factory and I make three necron warriors take a nap on the charge and give some wraths a couple of wounds. Then I realize I forgot to shoot my snipers. Darn. oh yeah, and his scarab swarms ate my sentinel in my deployment zone, turn 2. So yeah, Died less than gloriously in the name of the Emperor. Good thing he doesn't ask much more of me!

Don't really know what I'm doing yet. Looking at the meat blobs kind of gives me a brain fart, so next time I think I'm going to hold my list as I go through my units and maybe that'll help me not forget some like I did this time.
It's pretty obvious to me that I should have brought some more laz cannon's in my infantry blobs. Even with my poor rolls there was a real need for more heavy fire power.
Maybe if I get a troop carrier I can go find another guard player to show me the basics.

sounds like you were unlucky with dice rolls,
A regimental banner can be worth it for the leadership re-roll, it makes orders more likely to go through.

More lascannons is a good idea. See if you can strip all the useless gear out and try to get at least 8-10 lascannons in your 1500 list.

Not much you can do if the dice are agaisnt you. As you get a feel for what you are doing you'll forget less.
If you play against the person who is one of the most deadliest opponents and likes being so expect them to live up to the reputation and try and learn a bit (like you have) rather than just try to win.

I put me lascannons in hw teams put them behind and agies defence line give them an ammo dump and tank hunter or ignore cover special rule via orders that way they are more survivable and less likely to miss those precious shots.

I had a bad exsperience with my guard/sister if battle army Vr Necrons.
I wish I could give advice... But the undead robots are certainly a problem that as of yet I don't know how to deal with.
Infact, last game I killed all but one in a squad, that last one would have stopped them getting back up... Each and every one (13 I belive) got back up!!!!!
The trick is... And I have yet to master it! Concentrate fore on one target and move on.
This is a slight dig at necron players, I don't mean to annoy or displease anyone, however it is my opinion that they have the upside in the fact that they lack character and so they can put together an army bread for war!
Guard usually revolve around a idia/trate and therefore it's sometimes puts us at that disadvantage. This is one of the reasons I've gone for steel legion now. The lack of character inc Sargent means I can roll then into fire and write of the loss. Previous armies,
My fully converted pretorians meant that evry Sargent had such character that one squad loss was devastating to me:
So if you want to beat necrons you really need to lose your character of a guard player. Somthing I don't think we can really do!
"Imperial guard genral Vulpine to command! We need reinforcements, Call for Adeptus Astartes !!!!"

Are you honestly telling me that I'm afraid of getting my pretty marine sgts killed, Vulpine? They have ATSNKF..
Also the David Bowie avatar is back. Life is complete.

I'm saying Marine can chose a competitive army list without losing theme/character. So can most races, but I think guard have more difficulty.
And yes Bowie is back!
It's been a while as I've been concentrating on rules and models for a 10mm army based doctor who game (shameful plug)
Must say, it's quite now on IGMB??? I've started a thread for me steel legion (another shameful plug!) and had nothing much in regards to replies posted? Used to be constant!
Perhaps this is why we are suffering crushing defeats? Are guard players moving onto other armies?
What I mean is, the strain of being a guard player with a background story, different look. Let's face it, to fit a theme makes for possible a poor competitor and costs a load? I was lucky that GW mucked up and had to send me out my army again, so I had twice as much!

As a guard player who has moved on to Space Marines I can say it has nothing to do with competitiveness. Personally I was getting backache unpacking my guard armies for 1500 points + games. Now I never suffer even for huge 3k games; plus the latest SM list has awesome rules giving me loads of free transports if I take a fixed full company list + support. With guard I was getting fed up of static gunline lists. My marines are still quite gunline but now I have loads of transports, drop pods and land speeders so its a different game. Obviously guard can be mobile with chimera and taurox.. Maybe I'll get round to redoing my guard; I have 4 unpainted old style chimeras for my chem dogs when I do, so no more spending needed really. I was also going to do another project with 60 rough riders; this can be unbound. Think about how much damage that many riders could do to drop podding marines... I still like using my guard every now and then but the Mechanicus and the latest SM book really caught my attention more.
The cost might have something to do with it as well. Other armies usually need less than guard. Was lucky to buy a lot of mine when they were £1 per guardsman.

Agreed! The cost for guard players is daft! Squads are almost the same (near enough) as space marines, yet we need three times the men...
And then the upgrades, the heavy weapons squads ain't cheap, if you want one in every squad!!!!!
Finally the tanks and Valk, expensive.
I was hoping that they would do larger kits. Like the cultist models as the detail in click and play models is way better than before. Why not do £25 kits with 26 models in. With bits to make 2 squads and command with bits to make up heavy weapons team in each unit or, instead of a command make up a heavy weapons squad. Somthing like that.

Build smaller forces, convert your miniatures more, or just don't play using the GW rules.
All these are steps to happiness.

Honsetly, I was ready to sound the retreat after my dice beefed my first round of shooting. But the Commisair held the line... for like another round!

I like having options.
I see no rush to buy or acquire stuff, so if the army starts small and feels good; that's cool... I can then add a little here and there as I go, collecting models for the sake of the models and painting for the fun of it.
Then I can put them on the table and use whatever rule-set my opponent and I agree upon.

My new technique is to buy a squad, build and paint them, and have them finished before I buy another squad and repeat the process. Though it's very slow, it only took about a year and now I have a 1250pt, fully painted guard army!
