Hey, I've decided to get back into 40k after about... 14ish year, 3rd edition. And decided to take up Guard. Plan on using some steel legion models I already have after all these years. Tinkering round with army lists and trying to get to grips with all the new different rules. Look forward to getting to meet you all.

Sounds like a plan. Have you picked up the latest rulebook and codex yet? I came back fro 3rd edition into 5th edition after a similar long break and found things to be pretty similar. 5th felt like a more refined version of 3rd. Things have changed a bit in the last two versions though, they added a bunch of stuff in 6th and have been trying to polish that up in 7th.
The main differences are probably: There is now a psychic phase between movement and shooting There are now flyers with rules for flyers The Force Organisation Chart that 3rd used to balance armies and make them about having troops and balance is pretty much dead. Which has upsides and downsides. Super heavies now roam non-apocalypse tables. Casualties are removed from the front of a unit (well, whatever front of the unit was closest to the firing weapon) Allies are a thing. So you can split your points between your Guard and other imperial forces.
But despite all the changes the Imperial Guard still stand resolute. (Even if some people do call it the Astra Militarum now.)
Welcome back, Commander.

Welcome back brother!
I'm fairly new myself, though I've been studying the newest editions for quite some time now.
I wasn't in the game in the third edition (I believe I got in during the fifth?) but I can only assume a lot has changed as emptyhat mentioned above. The game does seem a lot more fun these days in the newest editions, especially with the new models and rules that are coming out.
Definitely post some pics of your army in the picture post section!

I dug up some old steel legion ones, oldschool Pewter ones. Not sure if they finecasted (something i heard about today) them recently we're see when I buy some more. Yes got the lastest codex, whats happened to my stormtroopers? Hellguns been replaced by hot shots, thats some heavy AP on them mind. I see what you mean about force organisation, that just don't seem right to me. I still believe 3 squad min for a platoon is standard. Astra Militirium to Guard is what Adeptes Astartes is to Space Marines, only to be used in formal high gothic meetings and such. I'll post some pics soon as I get a grip to these new (to me) paint systems, went for a steel legion drab - layered with kislev flesh, drybrushed some texture paint and washed with agrax earthshade and I'm not to sure. Gonna go for a base with drab, drybrush with terminus stone and shade with reikland fleshshade. I'll do some experiments and see what you all think. And heres a quick one, they typo this or is the Wyvern seriously only 65 pts? Hah. Oh, mega glad to see guardsmen down to 5pts each, come issued with frags as standard. I've got 4 weeks to get 1,000 pts painted up, challange accepted. Cheers gents.

If you are finding the Kislev Flesh too fleshy for the coats you could try using Rakarth Flesh with the Steel Legion Drab.

Thanks. Gonna try the drybrushing method, if nothing else give it a dirtier look and save time but still give a decent effect.

Leather was mournfang brown - tyrant skull - earthshade. Think I over did the dry brushing in some places but I think i've created a decent effect in a good amount of time. Thanks for you advice, but highlighting is just for me at this moment in time.

They might look less overdone when you paint the bases up. The Steel Legion fight on a world which will coat you in layers of abrasive chemical ash which might be what you are going for with the Dry paint dry-brushing. If you are seeing that sort of effect on the base too then it should make sense visually.
And if you end up making a game board for it you can have some petrified corpses.

Jut tried that and itvworks bang on. Nice tip. Just gotta fill out these horrible gaps that metal models create.

The best thing that worked for me was using games workshop spray paint to prime all my metal models before painting them. Failing that, I'd recommend a base coat of a color of your choosing. Perhaps a couple base coats if you continue to have the same problem.

Welcome to the IGMB, and welcome back to 40K as well. I'm only now testing my feet in the waters once again ... in 4th edition rules.
