Hello everyone, I've recently convinced myself that I really should be collecting an Imperial Guard army, and the people over at the 'Beginners Board' have been very helpfull in answering all my guard-related questions. So it is time for me to get to painting, and after a couple of test schemes I've finaly found a scheme that works for me. It still needs a bit of work: the current skintone seems to fade into the armour if viewed from a distance and the armour/lasgun highlights are a bit too subtle, so I'll do a bit more experimenting in that department when I get started on the next squad. Now I still need to do a bit of clean-up, dot the eyes, and base them... but I'm pretty happy with how they turned out so far. C&C appreciated, Nutty

Good work bro. What is the motif of the camouflage?

Kirsten & OConnell: Thanks a bunch. OConnell: I decided to go with desert colors/camo because my Space Marines (the ones I finished anyway) are on desert bases and I' figured I'd use the same technique to base my Guardsmen to help tie the armies together on the table if I use them as allies (or play apocalypse). The bases will end up like these, but it's a process that work better when working on larger batches of bases (less clean-up, easier to mix paints/matererials/etc.) so I'll base my infantry once I get about 40-50 done.

A little update, my army is now very close to having a legal troop choice. 2nd infantry squad A bit of cleanup/detailwork to go. And a platoon command squad + chimera: Which are pretty much done (except for the bases ofcourse), although I might change the colour of the chimera's searchlight. The Chimera will probably be used to move around some veterans when I think of a way to set them apart from the regular troops. Next up will be a (lord) commissar so that I'll be able to field a small force of these guys, either as allies or on their own once the vets are done.

I really like the desert camo scheme, I was going to use a similar one for the Tau force I'm slowly building up. Good use of colour.

That chimera looks great, I love the search light and antennae. The colors look great on the guys too, I know it shouldn't throw me off as much but the only thing that bugs me is the guns matching the armor but that's the way it usually is so I dunno. Maybe it's just the yellow. Awesome though!

Judcottrell & Commissar: thanks! I'm quite pleased with how the Chimera turned out, so I started on one of it's bigger brothers using the same technique:

Looks good mate! What's your technique for bases?

Looks good mate! What's your technique for bases? Thanks! The bases are pretty easy to do; I stick some torn-off pieces of cork sheet on the base along with a few small rocks/modelling gravel, and slap a mixture of: plaster powder, pva, water, & a bit of moddeling sand on top. Using a sculpting tool to push the mixture around a bit to get it in all the nooks and crannies, and than lightly dab at it with an old sponge/balled up paper towel whilst it still 'wet' to create some texture. I'll probably make a batch of bases for my guardsmen over the holidays, I'd be more than happy to snap some pictures of the process if you (or anyone else) are interested.

Loving that! Bringing the BIG guns! Good start on it, you can see already how good it's going to be.

Looking good! How did you build that lying heavy weapons team? The plasma turret is sweet

Thanks guys,
Gear: I built the heavy weapons team out of two regular guardsmen and a spare heavy bolter.
I started by taking a leg bit and cutting of the actual legs where they meet the tunic. This gives you relatively flat edge to cut/saw along.
Then I stuck the groin/tunic part to a flat piece of plastic card with a bit of sticky tack, and glued the legs back on in a different angle. So that the boots are more or less flush with the surface.
After the glue had dried, I stuck the torso on with a bit of greenstuff. If you just glue it on as you would with a regular guardsmen you dont have room to glue the arms on, so I used greenstuff to create a bit of an angle. I also made sure the greenstuff didn't stick out, leaving a bit of a gap that I could fill in later. Having a the arm bits nearby lets you work out the angle you need pretty quickly.
Once the greenstuff holding the torso and the legs together had dried, I removed the plastic underneath the model. Then I filled in the gap with some more greenstuff and smoothed it out a bit. Didn't spend a whole lot of time on it, since its going to be hidden by the base anyway.
After that I glued on the arms, making sure the model could still lay flat on a base without wobbling to much. And stuck on the head.
The steps for the heavy bolter are pretty much the same, except I cut the lasgun from the arm holding it and glued the hand thats on the trigger to the heavy bolter.
The little bipod for the heavy bolter is made from knives/bayonets from the infantry box. I cut of the tip and the handle, and glued the blades to the heavy bolter at an angle.
I hope that makes sense.. It might be a bit difficult to follow my ramblings without pictures. If anything is unclear, let me know and I will clarify as best I can.

I haven't posted that much in this thread lately, but figured I'd share some of the pictures a friend took at our club's apocalypse battle. He only took several hundred pictures, and they are jumbled together in one big Imgur album.. So I just lifted a couple to share here: My main gunbase, sadly my Macharius got bumped during transport and one of the barrels got knocked off. Side view of the Imperial deployment, I brought "The Lord Castellan's Supreme Command" Apocalypse Formation and it did great. I got "Dead Eye Shot" & "Artillery Veteran" as warlord traits for Creed and this combined with some lucky rolls, allowed me to drop 4-5 ordnance templates each turn. Creed and his squad managed to blow up 3 damaged Knights as the result. The rest of the pictures can be found here m.imgur.com/a/83RtE for those that are interested.

Nice painting!
Looks like you have a lot of artillery support for your guard.
When you have an apoc game with some models unpainted - consider playing with black and white images and a few filters or effects, it'll hide the unpainted models lack of detail nicely and can give really nice end results.

Thanks Tread, I just grabbed a few pics from one of my opponents imgur accounts. But I'll keep it in mind for the next apocalypse battle.
Hopefully I won't be needing it for my own models though: I'm pretty close to completing my two platoons and am making some good progress on my tanks & artillery too. But after frantically trying to get everything reafy befor the apoc game.. I'm taking a little break from painting IG and am doing some work on my Tau.

It's been a while since I did any guard related modelling/painting, but I actually made quite a bit of progress today - built, primed, & based 3 scout sentinels.
- stripped the paint of the Kasrkin models I have been hoarding over the past year.
- primed & started painting a squad of 10 Kasrkin
- started converting a squad of 5 Scions into a command squad for my Kasrkin
Sadly work interrupted my progress and I didn't have time to take picture before I left. But I do have the whole of next week off; so hopefully I will be able to bring what I started today to completion by next weekend. And take some pictures whilst I'm at it.

Looking forward to seeing the progress! Sentinels are still my favorite model to build and paint. Dont know what it is about them but they are just so damn cool.

The sentinels were a lot of fun to build, but as you can see I haven't gotten around to painting them yet: The Kasrkin are coming along nicely though: A close up of one of the troopers: It's a pain in the behind to get a proper picture of these guys though. Between my mediocre camera and the fact that there isn't a ray of sunlight to be found.. They are sort of blending into a greyish blob. You can just about make out the highlights of you know where to look... So much for being subtle.

I really like the goggles, I'm jealous because I can never get them as good as you've done it.
