Hi,
I feel there is a lot of ambiguity around detachments, Formations and how these relate to Characters and Special Rules.
so here's a good set of questions for you:
1) Do I need a CAD before I can have an Alliance?
2) Do Formations allow for an Alliance?
3) Can I have multiple Alliances from the same source (ie, codex space marine) as long as they were from a different source to the Primary Detachment (eg, Codex Guard)?
4) Can I field 2 CAD's from different sources (ie, codex marines, codex guard)?
5) ..and if I did could each of them take an Alliance from a different source (ie, codex guard, codex marines)?
6) Am I right thinking I can have multiple CADs which can be the same source (ie Codex Orks) while Alliance's have to be from different sources to the Primary Detachment(ie IA Dread Mob)?
Question 7) If I have a Formation and I add an Independant Character from another Detachment who has a Relic do the effects of the Relic apply to the Formation?
8) Can Independent Characters with Special Rules convey their rules onto Formations by joining them when they are not listed as part of the Formation requirements, for example adding an allied Chaplain to a unit of Guardsmen who are part of a Formation?
9) Can this be done with Independent Characters which are outside any Formation or Detachment, for example if a Imperial Guard CAD was deployed with a single Chaplain in a Platoon Blob, would the CAd now count as unbound because there is 1 model which doesn't fit within either a Formation or a CAD?
10) Relics, Gifts of Mork etc state that there can be no more than 1 per army, however I am struggling to find where it states who can be given these and whether they have to be from the same source (ie, a codex craftworlds item given to the warlord in Codex Harlequins where the 'army' has detachments or formations from both craftworld and harlequin)
For ease of understanding response's can we all put in the numbers for our answers eg;
1) Not if you're using self contained formations - eg marines demi company can get any imperial allies
2) Yes but everything needs to be in a detachment either formation or CAD, else it's Unbound (which is perfectly legal also but lose benefits *think Predator army* )
3) Multiple of marine allies only if they're different chapter tactics. So .. guard primary CAD + Ultramarine allies + Iron Hand allies is perfectly OK (otherwise just take a marine CAD and a guard CAD)
4) Very much yes. You can even take desperate allies CAD
5) I'll have to check on this, presumably yes. You'll end up paying a lot for all the prerequisite HQs, if that's your thing.
6) Yes from the same source or different sources.
- The only alternate CADs are named differently. I'll list some oddball ones; The Wolves Unleashed (+1 HQ minimum) for SW lets you outflank your infantry squads on a 1/6 chance (increases if you attach a character)
-The skitarii detachment has no HQ choice (none in the codex) but one Alpha (sgt) is your warlord. Warlord gets Preferred Enemy but they all lose Objective Secured.
7) Yes; I think the Relic rules should allow it to effect any unit from your codex (presumably Orks?) In that case then it does so for all Orks within range regardless of how they are organised on your roster sheet.
8) Yes , I think so. The chaplain would give zealot but wouldn't transfer ATSKNF to them. Presumably if they run he just breaks off from them to fight if caught in a sweeping advance and carries on fighting but the guard would get destroyed.(I think...)
9) It's unbound if you just take an sm chaplain but its fine if he fits into a cad or formation.
10)
many thanks to Chemin for the above answers.
