Hey guys I'm used to playing me 2 friends who play tau and dark angels. I know what they have and depending on the points can kinda guess what they are going to field and build me list accordingly. But I am thinking of going in to tornaments late next year and am going to get some games in at me local GW until me army is fully painted (still a lot of work there). So haven't every really played a all comers list at 1850 points before and would greatly appreciate it if you could post me some of your so I can get some ideas cheers. Solidog.

I'm pretty new to the Guard myself and it's a bit tricky to offer listbuilding advice if I don't know what models you have.
But I can give some general tips to building TAC lists.
1. Decide how you want to win:
You can win be either scoring more objective points, by killing of the enemy before the game ends, or a combination of both.
If playing Maelstrom missions (odds are you will during a pick-up gamw) you want to have plenty of mobile units to capture the objectives as they come up, and mobile troops are even better as they can prevent the enemy from scoring points.
Killing the enemy shouldn't need a whole lot of explanation.
2. Decide on a 'theme':
Do you want to use tanks and mechanized troops? Flyers and droptrops? A boatload of infantry?
A combination is certainly possible, but you'd be better of sticking as close to one route as possible.
Taking vehicles for example, providing you opponent is playing a TAC list too: If you have one or two vehicles your opponent can focus all of his anti-armour units on them and take them out of the game early on, by bringing more you should be able to neutralize the units threatening your vehicles before all of your tanks are craters.
3. Create a foundation/basis for your list keeping 1&2 in mind.
This should be about 2/3 to 3/4 of your list IMHO: HQ, 2 Troops, and everything you need to win according to point 1. Which could mean more troops.
Special characters can certainly help, but are not always worth their points. An infantry heavy list would benefit from Creed more than an armoured company. And Pask can be really good, but he'll be a dead pretty quick if half your army is in reserve because they are mounted in flyers.
4. Support:
Once you have a solid foundation you need to get some support so they can go out and win you the game.
If you got a bunch of tanks/artillery ready to pound you opponent into the dirt: get some cheap infantry to protect them from deepstrikers and outflankers.
If you have veterans in chimera's to go out and capture objectives? Get a big scary tank or two to draw the enemy's fire.
If you got a bunch of infantry platoons; get them some cover to hide behind, and some anti-air to deal with flyers.
Etc.
5. Play against a couple of different opponents before fine-tuning your list.
Getting slaughtered by a pair of flyrants in one game doesnt mean you need to double the points your spending on anti-air for the next. Your next opponent might not have any flyers at all. Just take note of wht you lost, and keep it mind.
After having played 3 or 4 games with the sane list, try and figure out what won or lost you the games. If you find you always have trouble against a certain unit or playstyle, try and swap some things around and bring a counter. Playing the same list against your friends can help to: if they realize you keep bringing the same list, they will probably start looking for weaknesses.
To start of I'd say try and draft a list using points 1-4 and post it here to see if there are any obvious weaknesses. Improve it using feedback given and test it out.
Hope it helps,
Nutty

Heya, solidog I agree with nutty but check out my 1850 All Comers (With Kurov sub note) thread on the Army Lists heading. I am also in a similar spot as you but I have a tentative list planned based on previous experience and watching battle reports. Feel free to chip in your 2 cents.

thats good advice by nutty. I wrote this small guide here: commissar.proboards.com/thread/18364/7th-ed-tactics-discussionit can be summarised as this: The tasks I see armies now facing are: 1) Objective Control (Getting to objectives quickly, and then holding them) 2) Anti Infantry 3) Anti Elite 4) Anti Tank / Monstrous Creature 5) Anti Air 6) Anti Psyker 7) Flank Security (Protection from deep strike, infiltrate and outflank) 8) Leadership (Ensuring your men do not run away) I think it is possible to consider and cover all those factors in a 1000 point list, here's an example using infantry: Objective Control - Loads of troops; so platoons are good here Infantry and Elite will both fall to massed lasguns; the platoons cover this already Anti - Tank / Monstrous Creature will require auto-cannons and lascannons; add these to the platoons (either as HWS or in the squads) Anti - Air... well, there are a few good choices, the hydra, sabre platform and ageis with quad gun are good deals. Missile Launchers with Flakk missiles also possible Anti - Psyker; the brotherhood ruling is quite handy and these are fairly cheap to field. Flank Security; as long as you keep the auto-cannon in the middle they should be able to turn on anything arriving from the flanks, or some flamer squads (either PCS or SWS) to hover round the flanks waiting to wall of death. Leadership; well, we have a commander with a bunch of orders, or commissar lord for more Ld; seems to cover this role well. CCS PCS + 4 Flamer + 2 squads PCS + 4 Flamer + 2 Squads HWS + 3 Autocannon HWS + 3 Autocannon HWS + 3 Lascannon HWS + 3 Lascannon Wychvane Brotherhood Ageis + Quad I make this around 800 ish covering all bases isn't going to help if someone focus's on a specific unit type. It will help if they bring a mix and some units will be effective against targets beyond their initial role, (eg, HWS will still hurt things, psykers will be mischievous etc),
