As in AAA Hollywood with real actors not completely cgi etc.....
1) What would the story be...
2) Which factions would it involve...
3) Who would play the lead roles...

1) I would base it around the one of the Tyrannid conflicts. easier for Hollywood to understand, good guys vs nasty bugs, no shades of grey with tyrannids. Story would surround the defence of a world, starting with the initial signs of infestation, maybe an elite squad tracking a lector etc. but then builds into the main offensive. 2) Ultramarines are the logical choice for the Hollywood good guys. Probably have Guard led by Yarrick and elements of mechanicum in it as well. 3) Russell Crow - Marneus Calgar (Commander of the armies of ultramar, loyal servant of the true emperor............... yes gladiator quotes lol) Tom Hardy - Cato Sicarious Van Damme - Sebastian Yarrick (grizzly old guy) lol Sigourney Weaver - Guard Captain (because she is in everything Sci Fi, also cuz she would be fighting Tyrannids) Well im sure based on that Hollywood will snap up the franchise lol

I'd rather see something a bit more nuanced, that plays up the 40k universe's 'There are no good guys" aspect.
1) Film is Guard vs Secessionists. Several regiments are brought in to crush an uprising against insurrectionist forces that are murdering civilians and eating babies, etc. The secessionists are actually not that evil, mostly fighting for survival now. Show the human sides of the conflict, with gestures of humanity toward the other side mixed in with barbarism of war. It's fight they don't understand, but it's a job they have to do. Bonus points for uncovering heresy at the center of it all that put the secession in motion, and showing the Space Marines as super human killing machines with no remorse or mercy, something to be feared and avoided. I also think a more human-centric approach would emphises the weird and terrifying in the 40k Universe and make it "pop" a bit more while on screen (Interaction with the regiment's techpriest, for example).
2) Guard vs human irregulars. Maybe heretics.
3) Might be best to avoid big hollywood stars. It'd aid in suspension of disbelief if you don't go "Hey, that's Brad Pitt playing X' or whatever. Associate the face under the helmet with the role, not who they are in real life. I DO think Christoph Waltz would make an excellent sociopathic Commissar, though
Maybe a miniseries might be better.

Maybe they could use Waltz for everything; kind of like the one man stores. One actor movies. It can be done with CGI and really good make-up.

I would make it a demonic invasion on an imperial world. The main charecter would be an imperial commissar played by tom cruise. Men vs deamons is the way to go. It starts with a demonic invasion and a fight for survival. But then it goes wrong and it becomes a fight to stop the invasion from spreading from the world, and ends with an epic battle will tom cruise calls an exterminatouse on himself

How about a psychological suspense thriller with themes of isolation and heresey. It could wax philosophical on the decay of civilisation and be everything that people wanted the prequel to The Thing to be.

I think that the space Nazi's could be used in main stream provide the main protagonist was a more liberal spacemarine, like Titus from Spacemarine the game, yes he's a bad ass you crushes hordes of orks but he's the mr nice guy captain who has a soft spot for female guard captains and uses judgment rather than simply following the codex astartes dogma. hey for a series of films it could be a bit like marvel universe with many different characters getting their own films and then merging for a major conflict or event.

Every low budget hack in hollywood should play a miserable PDF regiment getting slaughtered by necron's desperately holding for as many civilian's to evacuate an awoken tomb world.
Oh, and CGI in Dark Angels showing up, tricking the Imperial Guard into diverting troops, artillery & tank support to collect some meager trinket and then betraying the PDF and leaving them to die with the realization that Billion's of innocent Imperial's could have been saved had we not been so gullible as to trust in those guys.

Space.. deep, black, mysterious... pan down and to the right:
a tear in time and space divulges imagery of fractal cosmology, lucid beauty and vulgar cruelty.. from which a ship appears and the rift seals behind the craft - the rift seemingly attempting to close its wispy talons around the craft as it does so.
After leaving warp (with a slight hint of what the warp might comprise of) the ship would approach a planet and its moons...
occasionally in the distance other craft would enter the area in a similar way, however these would be much larger, bulkier vessels.
...as the ship got closer to the planet it would be come obvious the planet is surrounded by massive ships which are deploying landing vessels of different sizes in their hundreds,
as it got closer still it would be evident that these huge craft were fending off fighters, missiles and lasers from opposing forces who are based on the other side of the planet.
The ship would close to one of these huge ships and be joined by a series of muscular ships that share the architecture of our main vessel, however these are smaller.
This unit would then accompany a collection of far bulkier drop craft and outpace these lumbering behemoths as they race into orbit - scenes would depict these bulky craft being struck by planetside ordnance and spilling men and materiel by their thousands - some men (those lucky enough to be equipped with them) desperatly trying to engage their re-breathers and grav chutes, others being sucked into the engines of the Dropship, other still spinning and colliding with one another - while behind them tanks would slide out of the vault-like bulkheads and tumble through the atmosphere in a blaze of re-entry.
Our unit of assault strikers would descend cleanly, avoiding obstacles and incoming fire, swooping through calculated gaps and using chaff and other defence systems, holding fire even when enemy air craft target and hassle the drop craft around them - clearly the payload they carry is intended for something greater...
As the Unit of craft streak through the sky the battlefield below slowly comes into focus, a huge maelstrom of flashing explosions, tracer fire, distant cities ablaze, closer terrain of mountains reveals spires of man-made constructions scattered upon the rocky landscape like stubborn cacti, it is amongst these towers the assault craft head - their aerobatic diplays demonstrate superior skill - often we see the enemy craft trying to pursue fail as they cannot corner, dive or thrust as fast and become distant puffs of smoke and debris.
cresting the mountains it looks like the targets may be in sight, colossal lumbering forms are engaging the enemy from strategic locations on the landscape, these bipedal forms are firing huge laser beams from shoulder mounted weapon points, others have enormous missile racks across their uppermost carapace which unload dozens of huge warheads in a single volley, below them there are smaller forms which share the same design principles - these move forward in close knit bands supporting one another against smaller targets which are clustered near the base of the mountains.
Our accompanying assault craft engage after burners and streak ahead of the ship we have been following, we see them close on a distant form (another vast bipedal structure) and launch their missiles, an eerie flare of colour and distortion emanates from this machine as shields are penetrated and eventually broken through - moments later a series of utterly black spots decorate the construction and it visibly crumbles into itself; the uppermost carapace armour buckling and folding into itself while other area's twist and distort, light itself seems bent in the destruction and suddenly the beast erupts in a catastrophic explosion.
As the battlefield is swept with the blast wave of this ultimate termination of warmachine prowess, the Assault craft powers forward and down, over bunkers and blunt ruins of outposts, through skirmishes and smoke, through burnt streets and boulevards of cities once proud which are now ground down to foundations and rubble. Skimming past crumbling tenement blocks, over factory warehouses and the structures of combustible industry the craft heads deeper into the melee, beneath the craft sweep scenes of plight, tanks pushing through walls with debris crushing defensive positions, bipedal machines brought low by infantry fire, flyers tumbling from the sky pursued by victorious attackers, burning debris from orbital craft crashing into the forsaken terrain, a rain of machine parts and men and munitions fall from above as yet more drop ships spill their loads prematurely. somehow the pilot is able to evade all this, seeming focused on the glowing white and red epicenter of the recent explosion, all that remains of the carcass are the shins and feet of the giant machine beneath which is a scorched and barren crater devoid of life.
Into this smouldering landscape plunges the craft, a massive trench kilometers wide appearing before them into which the craft dives eagerly, the landscape beneath the surface is no less filled with tenacious fire and courage, the trench yields shapes of grandeur; mansions and statues pass by unscathed so far by the ferocity of the ravenously consuming warfare, suddenly it seems the enemy is aware of our presence and anti-air batteries and turrets swing to fire upon the craft. the swathes of incoming munitions, hard rounds and laser fire are knocked aside by energy shields from within the craft, a glowing field begins to shine around the craft and as the craft comes in to close up we see the rear hatch opening.
a series of humanoid figures stand with heat shimmer rising from their back packs, holding various arcane weapons, swords and holy trinkets the group stride out of the craft and into the gulf below, the glow of energy is centered around on of these humanoids and as they fall their transporting craft spirals up and away, closely pursued by seeker missiles which are ignoring the chaff the craft is sending out; we do not see how this concludes as the focus is on the humanoids who control their descent and are able to dive forward and down; deep into this heavily defended location.
upon landing one humanoid is seen to remove something from their belt, engaging the teleport homer a pulsing sound reverberates through the ground and a series of deep bass noises coincide with the arrival of a number of large and bulky forms...
(no cast, no dialogue - just epic action)

I've been running through ideas in my head about how to do a Band of Brothers style series. I even thought up the epic introduction. It would take place on Cadia, and the protagonists would be an already veteran Cadian squad. Just regular shock troops, not Kasrkins. Kasrkin might show up later for a cameo haha, but they wouldn't be the center. Most of the "extras" would be regular guardsmen, and especially, white shields, which are the most numerous type of soldier on Cadia. Each episode would display a struggle against the guys who betrayed Cadia, with Creed being the regimental commander (not shown often, but a few times at least). Each episode would also have flash backs and display the background of each squad member, and then flashforwards to the current time as these veterans try to keep themselves, and their platoon, alive during this massive struggle on their homeworld. In the final episode, the massive assault against the traitors (and I can't remember what they're called, I have to break out my 4th edition codex to check the story). Most of the squad members would die, save for maybe 2 or 3. Good way to rip the hearts out of the viewer, learning about these young men (and maybe a lady or two), and then watching them die because battle in the 41st millenium is so dangerous and deadly. And I would shamelessly pick this track as the intro credits song. Imagine it from start to finish: A Games Workshop Series... ...Cadian Gate (name of series) *roll credits, show black and white clips of each cast member, with character name and actor* Show a couple key scenes of them in action Then cut to black and begin the episode. Weren't the traitors on Cadia the [something beginning with a 'V'] Cataphracts? (from another planet basically)
They used the military parade as a pretext for causing carnage/ surprise attack.
I think if a movie was made they would probably make a new campaign, not something old-school like the Cadian Gate or Ichar IV.

I believe the film has been in front of all us Guard fans for about 20 years. Gaunt's Ghosts.

If you do "There's no good anywhere", you'd probably just be copying Avatar which copied Dances with Wolves.
