I re-read fifteen hours over the last couple of days (the small advantage of illness).
I am wondering if the short story Knee Deep contains a subtle detail which gives the whole of the beucheroc situation an even darker and more futile twist.
I am referring to the second rumble that occurs after the methane system is destroyed, obviously the first subterranean rumble is caused by the detonation of the methane, however, there is also mention of valuable stores of promethium beneath the city - hence why the guard have fought so hard to keep the city - is the secondary rumble the promethium stores igniting?
The implication is that this would make the entire 10 years of siege pointless and all efforts to hold the resource a useless waste of life.

So, wait. There's a short story with Fifteen Hours?
There was something very sneaky about Dem Orkses. Blood Axes!

I sort of thought that the whole point of Fifteen Hours was that everything that was happening was pointless and a waste of life, but the Imperium doesn't care because it's got a million worlds, and the loss of one isn't going to matter anyway...

I fully agree, and this is the tone of the whole story (futile, bleak, pointless etc), I am just wondering if the writer put in a small hint that something takes place which none of the characters realise is a consequence of their actions at the time.
