So I might have ordered the 'start collecting Skitarii' box from GW, as I have always loved the Mechanicus and really really wished for years that they would do a 40k army of them.~
After my haitus of a few years there are now TWO mechanicus factions for 40k and also models for HH!
I really like the Heresy models, however, can/how do they translate across to 40k? Is there 'one book to rule them all' or will I have to buy a bazillion Heresy rulebooks to use them?
Also with the Cult Mechanicus, can I take Detetchments and ally them with my Skitarri easy enough (as I absolutely hate the electropreist models, although I like pretty much everything else)?
Any comments/help will be greatly appreciated, as I am feeling like a rather confused old man right now!

I think the simplest thing you might want to do, for the moment, is look at using the 30K Mechanicum minis as "counts as" units for 40K Adeptus Mechanicum (and vice versa eventually). Oh, and since the FOC for 40K can now be thrown out the window, at the expense of gaining battle forged benefits, you can pretty much take what you want, as Imperial stuffs all may ally with one another, IIRC... kirsten might have some more in-depth ideas on integrating units from the different lines, but yeah you'd likely need to get the HH FW tomes to do it.

You can take whatever you want but then its unbound.
If you want battle forged it has to be either:
- CADs ; or multiples of them from different codex; e.g. one detachment of skitarii (2 troops minimum) and one detachment of cult mechanicus (1hq + 2 troops minimum)
- CAD + formation
- Pure formations (the new codexes are taking this to the next level with core and auxiliary choices)
In all probability there might be a combined 'dex for the mechanicum this year some time, with updated formations and more units. In fact rumours are pointing to new robot maniples on the horizon.

there are rumours of a combined Skitarii/Cult Mech book coming this year that turns them in to one faction. there are also rumours that the next Forge World Imperial Armour will include the Mechanicum, providing 40k rules for their 30k range, much like they do with the marine stuff. They also stated that Skitarii will be in the Heresy, presumably using the term to mean Mechanicum infantry as you get them in the horus heresy novels, rather than the 40k faction in its' entirety. I would expect the 40k infantry, the battle servitors etc. to make the crossover. the kastellan robots in 40k are a variant of the Castellax robots in 30k. So it isn't crazy to bring some 30k robots to a 40k game with appropriate permission from opponents. I want to get one or two of the 30k transports and giant plasma cannon tank thing too. you would only need the one book www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-GB/The-Horus-Heresy-Mechanicum-Taghmata-Army-List

For some reason I assumed that the FW mechanicum had to use the tech-thralls with laslocks as their troops choices but it's good that they get skitarii and battle servitors. Tech-thrall covenant

they do at the moment, but that will change. as I said, next Imperial armour brings 30k rules to 40k for Ad Mech, and next Horus Heresy book or two, possibly Prospero, will bring skitarii to 30k. so the rumours go anyway, though I would pretty much guarantee Imperial Armour adding 30k mechanicum units. All the 30k space marine stuff gets 40k rules.

Would you think Storm Eagles would be OK for 40k Dark Angels? It's just I've got 2 sets of the mark 4 tacticals and those Dark Angel upgrade pads and I really hate the DA flyer models but think the Eagle looks great.
If the skitarii and battle servitors get FW resin extra weapon choices that would be crazy; all the options.

Storm Eagles have 40k rules yeah. they are lovely models.
yeah I am hoping for some nice weapon variants. I would actually really like to see the battle servitors get a straight forward heavy bolter option, even a multi laser. all the weird and wonderful weapons are cool, but when I used them against eldar they really struggled. I really wanted some good old fashioned anti infantry firepower.

The models are great; but I'd hesitate to even use Kataphron at that points value. They seem very glass hammer units; the guns they pack are awesome but it's got the same Toughness and Wounds as an Ogryn. Have you tried sticking them behind fortifications with the TP Dominus repairing/ healing them?
If anything I preferred the sound of the other variant with slightly better armour (3+ as opposed to 4+) and the Torsion cannon doesn't sound bad for taking out armour/ very heavy infantry/ walkers.
Highly doubt they'd get normal heavy weapons; there always seem to be new weapons kicking around nowadays. If they do get normal lascannons or multilasers then I'd expect them to have the bonus to Overwatch, like the heavy stubber and skitarii walker weapons.
