Hey! So I'm thinking of having a small space marine force to begin my foray into the Adeptus Astarties. The idea is to be as balanced as possible whihin the limitation of 500 points and force org.
HQ: Librarian (Level1)
Troops: Tactical Squad (10 Man) - Sergeant with Melta Bomb, Flamer, Missile Launcher. Tactical Squad (10 Man) - Sergeant with Melta Bomb, Flamer, Lascannon.
Heavy Support: Thunderfire Cannon with Tech Marine.
Let me know what you think.
Had a game today with proxy models against Skitarii. Purge the Alien. It went well. Only loosing the missile launcher combat squad. Had a lot of bad rolls losing most of each squad but reduced my enemy to just a squad of snipers.

Looks like a solid start to me, add some rhino's/razorbacks/bikes on to these for mobility and objective grabbing and you should be good for 750.
Or if you are planning on playing 500 for a while: drop one combat squad so you can fit in a razorback or a small bike squad.

It can be crazy hard to cover the bases (and the board) on a 500 point budget.
This is what I went for for my SM list, it's balanced a little more to fight against other casual 500 point list I wrote.
The Emperor's Champion Crusader Squad 5 Initiates, bolt pistols and chainswords Crusader Squad 5 Initiates, bolters, Lascannon, Plasmagun Landspeeder H.Bolter/Assault Cannon Landspeeder H.Bolter/Assault Cannon Landspeeder Multimelta

Thanks for replying guys. Yeah nutty, I've thought about a razor back. I'll definably have a think about that some more.
Empty, I'm just trying to picture you list. As I know little about space marines and Black templars how many marines are in the crusader squads? Are those the ones with the initiates? Love the LS with HB/AC. Good combo and the Mulitmelta would be perfect for anti tank.

Updated it to show that they are 5 marine squads. The design requirements for the list were that it had to be BT themed and interesting to play. And since we are playing on 6'x 4' tables and swapping lists I thought having moderate anti-tank stuff on mobile platforms that could whiz around and secure maelstrom objectives could be fun. The EC buddies up with the crusaders without weapon upgrades and tries to assault stuff and the shooty squad sits back and shoots.
