So correct me if this is a dumb idea, I have started running my infantry squads without any special weapons but equipping the sergeant with a bolter and a melta bomb. The bomb is cheaper than the gun, gives you that extra movement from the charge, has a higher chance to hit the vehicle once your in combat, and your hitting rear armor. Have I hit my head one to many times or does this sound like a solid tactic?

It depends on what you want them to do I guess. I have a couple of sergeants with bolters and sometimes use them to fill out points, but I usually put them in a shooting oriented squad. The way I see it a sarge has more chance of killing something with a Bolter than he has with a chainsword and they look cool with a bolter.. so it can be worth the points Melta bombs are cheap and usefull too, but the combo doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. The two have very different targets and using the bolter means you can't charge and use the Meltabomb. I am curious as to how you use those squads though. I would love an excuse to use my bolter sergeants more often.

I run blobs with either flamers boltpistols and meltabombs on the sargeants and priests or lascannons/autocannons bolters and meltabombs (perhaps a commissar so they can stay put while being able to go to ground) When using priests it is necessary to bring meltabombs lest the enemy locks you up with a walker or monstrous creature (zealots cannot break due to our weapons are useless)
