So me and a bunch of my buddies are getting into the hobby. We've got Blood Angels, Crimson Fists(Space Mahroons), Eldar, Dark Eldar, Necrons, Orks, and of course myself the Imperial Guard. We also have our resident experianced players who plays Necrons, Blood Angels, and Gene Stealer Cult. We've decided that 1000 points is a good goal for us to reach over some time to learn and develop. Anyways the point of this post is to get your feedback on how I plan to reach 1000 points. - Commissar - 25
- Platoon Command Squad with Vox Caster - 35
- Infantry Squad with Vox Caster and grenade Launcher x2 - 120
- Chimera with dual Heavy Flamers, a Dozer Blade - 70
- Leman Russ Battle Cannon equipped with Heavy Flamers x2 - 300
- Leman Russ Vanquisher with Lascannon - 145
- Leman Russ Punisher with a dozer blade and Pask as my HQ - 210
- Veterans Squad With 3 Melta Guns and a Vox Caster - 95
General Strategy is to let the Battle Cannons whittle away at far away enemies while the Punisher and Guardsman squads bubble for them and Deal with forces that get to close. Figured the Chimera can function as either an objective securer, go after enemy Armour or serve as further protection.
So thoughts, this is only a 1000 point army and I am brand spanking new. So far I have an Infantry squad, commissar, Lemon Russ (all these came in the starter set), an additional Leman Russ and a Leman Russ Demolisher Kit.

Welcome to the Guard! It looks alright as a starting point for 1000 you opponents are going to have a lot of trouble dealing with that much armor at first (they will learn to deal with it soon enough though( There are some things I would personally do a bit different though. This does not mean that you have to do it this way, just offering a different perspective. - Vanquishers at bs3 can be... less than excellent. They miss 50% of the time on average, so be prepared. Personally I would swap the vanquisher cannon for an exterminator autocannon turret. You get 4 twin-linked (re-roll misses) shots at str7 at 48". It helps to kill transports so that your battlecannons can shoot at the disembarked passengers. Because it has 4 twin-linked shots at decent strength you can even threaten vehicles with it, or take a chunk out of a monsterous creature, or do some damage to infantry. In short... an excellent tank that can cover a lot of roles. - Melta veterans: I give mine 2 special weapons (melta or plasma) you can only shoot two guns out of a chimera's hatch, and veterans typically want to stay inside of the chimera as long as possible. Use it as a "drive-by" unit and you'll be fine. - Platoon: I'd give the infantry squad flamers instead of grenade launchers, and put in a heavy weapon team (can't go wrong with autocannons) keep them in the back so they can protect the tanks. You have a lot of Leman Russ tanks (~60%) of you army. And one of the most important things to remember when playing guard is that: you HAVE to protect your big guns A Russ has a front armor of 14 which makes destroying it by shooting at it's front pretty hard. However they have a rear of 10 so most opponents will try and get behind them, or attack them in close combat (you always hit a tank on the rear armor in close combat). Meltas are another way to deal with AV 14 but they want to be in 6". Either way your opponent has to get close, having a 20 man infantry platoon sitting behind your Battle tanks helps keeps them safe. They will give the tanks a cover save from shooting in the rear arc, and if an enemy melta squad comes close they can move in and flame them. Or if an enemy melee squad comes close you can move up your infantry so they can fire overwatch (flamers are good here too) and take the assault to keep your tanks firing another turn. Anyway... enough of my rambling: get out there and do the emperor proud!

Welcome To the Board.
Just going to Echo Nutty's suggestion with the Exterminator.
The Exterminator is user friendly with the twin linked goodness, you'll get more use out of it than the Vanquisher.
Against the Elder, it'll work well against the walkers, Vypers and jetbikes, whilst your Leman Russ is dealing with a Wraith lord. Plus, 3 Heavy Bolters to take care of those Dire Avengers, you can't go wrong.
