My guard is going to fight a Tyranid army for the first time this weekend, on a 1.275 points match against an opponent who is much more experienced than I, but his army is mainly consisted of Start Collecting boxes. I came up with this list:
HQ: 70 pts
CCS (60) + Autocannon (10)
Troop: 250 pts
PSC (30)
Infantry Squad (50) + Flamer (5) X 4
Troop: 195 pts
PSC (30)
Infantry Squad (50) + Grenade Launcher (5) X 3
Troop: 75 pts
Veterans Squad with 3 Grenade Launcher (75)
Fast: 125 pts
Hellhound with Heavy Flamer (125)
Fast: 130 pts
Bane wolf with Heavy Flamer (130)
Heavy x2: 300 pts
Leman Russ Eradicator (120) + Plasma Cannons (30)
Heavy: 60 pts
Wyvern with Heavy Bolter (60)
Elite: 70 pts
7 Ratlings
That’s it. I don’t think he will bring too many swarm units, so I expended some points on more versatile weapons (such as the GLs, the Autocannon and the Bane Wolf).
What do you think of it? If he brings some heavy stuff, can the Russes with Plasma Cannons take care of it?

Do you have the option of building flying Hive Tyrants from the SC boxes?

I think the wings are included on the hive tyrant sprue.. so that is a pretty scary prospect without any AA. And since a walking tyrant is a dead tyrant so unless your friend is building a fluffy tyranid army I would assume every tyrant he has is flying... A winged hive tyrant with two twin-linked brainleech devourerers can easily kill everything in the list. Two would be a bloodbath
The good thing is: if he brings two or more flyrants at this points level, you get to sock him with his codex and claim victory that way.
Still... I'd look into some form of AA, maybe swap the wyvern for a Hydra, or include a defense line with quadgun. Other than that the list looks ready to kill some nids

Unfortunately I don’t have a quadgun or any other AA, so all I can do is change the Wyvern for a Hydra and hope it will be enough against his air units. My thoughts about deployment are to use the troops with flamers, the Hellhound and the Bane Wolf on offense, one Leman Russ, the Hydra, the CCS and the troops with GL will stay on defense, while the other Russ and the Ratlings will swing across the battlefield where they are most needed. Is that consistent?

Flamers work well on both offense and defense (especially vs bugs) so don't get tunnelvision in their use or deployment. A hellhound will be a valueable tool vs Nids, so you could have it behind your lines ready to flame anything that comes close. Torrent lets it reach quite far, and those gaunts are going to close the gap anyway. So you could rush it forward and flame as many guys turn one, or you could flame a couple of guys from a distance turn 1 (and stay out of charge range) so you can hit them full blast turn 2, and kill the remnants with lasguns. Having it sit behind your lines will make you opponent think twice before charging, and that can be worth more than a few dead gaunts. Just make sure to keep you vehicles protected by infantry, try not to overextend your lines, and trust in your lasguns vs the small critters.

Of course keeping guard castled for too long can lose you the game on points. Especially on maelstrom.
