I-I hope that the new 8th edition changes the fluff so they can happen.. I really really like female space marines and I think that the new edition might change things up, I-I have a theory about it too! Right now I justify it by saying some rogue apothecary does something highly heretical.. But than they cant be official space marines and its less cool...
So my theory is this! ^ _ ^
Guiliman is coming back we all know that! so the next storyline is going to be the ultramarines VS the imperiums, were gunna have a reformed ultramarine core listening to and following there chosen champion who will clear away the extremism and fanaticism within the ranks and that means that playing around with the gene-seed will no longer be considered heretical. Guiliman will need as big a force as possible. I think it might work and it could be fun and its not like they dont ever change or retcon fluff right? Anyway.. I am a bit nervous about posting this and I just wanted to talk about this idea..

Frankly I've always thought that the restriction on female space marines was arbitrary, and ridiculous. It would be cool if GW finally decided that that was the case too.

It always felt silly, like they invented weird convoluted science to prevent it but it always just felt like an excuse not to make different models..

If the Super Space Marine/ Sigmarine rumors are right, then they may decide "Oh wait yes women can be Space Marines". They just teased a female Stormcast Eternal, so they're sort of moving in that direction. That said, I'd prefer they push out some plastic Battle Sister kits first, but that's just me. If you're looking for models that could be female space marines, allow me to shamelessly plug my thread of randomness, since it's got an image of one of the TGG 2 Knights of the Chalice (first post, third picture). They're basically female terminators, and they're pretty frickin' sweet.

It all sort of came out of the 80s gothic scif imagination so it isn't too surprising that's how it went. I think one of the smoothest ways to do it would be to have one of the lost Primarchs return from outside the Imperium leading a legion of either just female space marines or mixed. Even if the Emperor only made sons the warp changed them significantly, perhaps they ended up a woman when they arrived on their far flung destination and the STC units and tech culture there was less restrictive so that it allowed them to role with making a less restricted legion, GW could even get a slightly different Mkk of power armour out of it to flog to those who are interested in that sort of thing.

^ ^ Honestly it would be a super easy fix if GW felt like it.
And yeah I have no hard feelings about it, I get it, its a product of the 80s when all female warriors ware chain mail bikinis and manly men were the heroes of fantasy. Its not shocking at all, I just think if they decided to change it now way in the future it would be pretty cool.. Heck if they wanted to they could just retcon the fluff and be like "What they were here all along!" its not like they havent done that before. But yeah. I hope the new 8th edition codex's change up the fluff a bit and make it possible. Nothing against sisters of battle but cool juggernaut warrior woman are just really cool!! > w <

Oh! Your the best friend of Melissia! She showed me your post once before! Hello I am Dizzy! Hello, and welcome to the IGMB! As to the current discussion, GW has released more female models in the past year (Sisters of Silence, Greyfax, Celestine, Yvraine) than they have since I started playing, with the exception of the Dark Eldar release. The new CEO seems to be setting a new direction for the company, and more female minis looks to be part of it, probably in part to draw in new players and appeal a wider audience (which I support). So, fingers crossed for 8th. I also think it would be hilarious for the butt-hurt that'd come pouring out of places like Dakka. There's also counts-as, if you can find third party models, but they're few and far between, and usually nowhere near the overall quality of GW kits. Until then, your bet bet is to play the Deathwatc RPG with a group that's okay with a female marine.

well female Stormcast have been in the fluff from the beginning. I suspect space marines were always male because 80s misogyny. In one of the Horus heresy novels however Malcador tells Dorn they should have made all the Primarchs and legions female to avoid this nonsense, so it is clearly possible. I can't see GW doing anything about it personally, but there we are.

We've got a few Dakka refugees. The only time you'll see that sort of rage here is if you mention Mass Effect's thermal clips to ElegiacRequiem.
Anyway, why wait for Rowboat to make some female marines when you can do it yourself? Get some regular marines (possibly the deathwatch ones would be best suited), put a little greenstuff in the neck plug, then plunk some 3rd party heads on the bodies. Statuesque miniatures has some decent ones, but I haven't seen how they pair with Marine bodies.

Since Space Marines don't breed, being that they are derived from a gene-seed which is implanted in a human, they're not really a gender either way. I don't see a reason why they couldn't put a gene-seed in a female human, maybe it's been happening for some time. I guess their looks can be put down to a lot of hormone injections. Here's some female space marines: imgur.com/gallery/Oso5x

The Imperium has just been almost destroyed by Abaddon, who is closing in on Terra. Your assertion is that during these End Times, Guilliman would then cause a new galaxy splitting civil war by stabbing the rest of the Imperium in the back because he dislikes extremism? The same Guilliman who slaughtered thousands of alien civilisations during the Great Crusade? If anything the Imperial military organisations that don't see eye to eye with the old vision of Imperial Truth will just be censured, like the Word Bearers were at Monarchia, and then forced to serve in an eternal crusade. Whether the organisations retain their old hierarchy remains to be seen, so we could get SoB as they were or they could be disarmed and turned into cheap Penal Legion fodder, although I find the latter option to be the least likely.

To be fair, Monarchia was at the Emperor's orders, and Guilliman wasn't particularly comfortable with doing it. Also he was quite literally crowned with a halo that radiates the light of the Emperor by a living saint. So there's that. I think he's pragmatic enough to realize the Imperium needs worship of the Emperor as a crutch at this point, just to make it through to another day.

Still only halfway through book 1 but I got the other 2 to read eventually. Celestine mounts a disco ball on Guilliman?
Right now the Imperium can't risk a second Apostasy war but the Sororitas are quite good at monitoring the Ecclesiarchy - they aren't just blind foot troops. Just finished Faith and Fire by James Swallow and according to that even lord high deacons have problems controlling the actions of the SoB, who police the whole organisation as well as being the main foot troops.

Or we could have plastic Sisters of Battle. Or plastic female Guard. You know; something that isn't [heretical profanities] Astartes.
I demand my flamethrower-bearing bondage nuns in skin tight power armour; they are the greatest OPFOR for my hordes of scrofulous mutants; the natural enemy of the Lost and the Damned, the last line of human purity against the scabrous tide of mutation and heresy.

I second this, female guard takes no reworking of the fluff and actually should have happened years ago since tons of regiments (cadians included) had large parts female population. Plus god damn I want plastic sisters. There is already a ton of stuff for all the different marine armies that they can kind of screw off for new stuff, especially things that would require good reworking of fluff in a time where it would most likely seem forced. I would say the switch to having females being marines should wait until the progression of the story is done and use it as a full motion in it own right rather than having it be shoved into this galaxy wide shatter.

Still full of elitist arse trumpets... Sadly they get like that, probably just to inflate their own, already bloated egos. I've been with the IGMB going on 6 years now, on and off, and I think I've only ever had one real problem with someone, and that was FlamingKillerMajig or something to that effect. But saying that, the guy then found me on Facebook, having been banned here, apologised and I do believe he's on my Facebook friends still. Regarding your theory with female Space Marines, I think it's unlikely that GW will add female marines, as they seem to lean more towards larger ranges of prodominantly female miniatures, but, also to agree with what Reds said... They are definatly branching out... The only female models I knew about when I first started collecting were the 'page 3' daemonettes of Slaanesh. But.. having said this, around here a lot of people write there own fluff, and it doesn't always adhere to GW by the word, so you will get a much more pleasant reception to your ideas here. Welcome aboard! Dave

With all due respect (and God knows I like this forum) female space marines could possibly be the only move by GW that would actually make me quit the hobby. It has nothing to do with the fluff, indeed retcons happen. I always thought nevertheless that 40k was the only relatively large franchise that would not try to make itself politically correct and open. The fact that even its heroes would be by our standards genocidal maniacs filled a niche that is rather interesting. Now with the moves to remove Slaanesh, promote some understanding between Eldar and Men and portray the Tau as the good guys I get the feeling that GW wants to make the story more paletable to a larger audience. I understand that I am not the greatest sage on fluff or the oldest fan and I get that different people get different things out of the hobby but I somehow feel that if 40k was to be influenced by the need of diversity or the concern for the representation of the sexes it would lose part of the darkness and grit that I enjoy (I am sorry I cannot express myself well, not a native speaker). I would like to see female guardswomen and plastic sisters (do not get me wrong) but seeing the company getting out of the way to open the game to a wider audience somehow upsets me (that makes me a little begoted perhaps...) Bottom line many people use make believe to control and expend some of their wost insticts 40k has been that for me. The idea that the story has to comform to what is essentially good manners these days takes this chance away from me. I hope I did not come accross as disrespectful....

Scientifically it could happen. If the main requirements were - young initiate, must be male, then they broke that rule for Kor Phaeron of the Word Bearers, as he was way too old to begin with. Using a lot of resources they still circumvented his Astartes surgery but still made him strong, gave him plenty of rejuvenats and alternative surgery to make him an almost astartes, albeit one who was looked down on by the common WB for exactly the reason that he wasn't a true brother.
But personally I think of most Chapters as being like a monastic brotherhood so perhaps the gender barrier is there for the same reason (not that it made a difference in terms of younger people being abused in these places historically). Some institutions try not to change ever, but then look at the Church of England ; you can be a female priest and even rise very high to bishop or higher; something like that is unheard of in older denominations. And this is only within the last 10-15 years..

I think that there needs to be a clear difference between in game evil, and out of game lack of representation. The Imperium is a horrific fascist state that spends lives as currency, and has all of the worst fears of George Orwell writ large over the whole galaxy. It doesn't care about gender, or race. Only that it continues to get grist for the mill of war. It wouldn't care about having male only soldiers, as long as you can hold a lasgun, you can fight in the IG. Space Marines are male only because of out dated real world ideas of what would sell, or be cool. There is no good reason in universe, that the process to make a Space Marine couldn't work on women, though it should result in Space Marines that look the same as the ones that currently exist.
