So, I've been dark for a while... deployments will do that to you.
I'm back in full swing and the last full edition of 40k I remember playing regularly is... 5th edition...
Played a game of 8th the other day and got STEAM ROLLED, because he kept half of his force in reserve and deepstriked them into my deployment zone on turn one... welp... nuts
Thoughts on the new turn 0 plans and tactics to avoid this sort of thing?

Most people usually offer up a screen of conscripts as a sacrifice to the gods of Alpha Strike. "Bubble wrapping' tanks and other important units with bodies is usually successful. Just be careful about positioning, as you may end up with your tanks being sucked into an assaul thanks to a pile in move.

Welcome back! yeah... what's this crap about tanks being locked in an assault? Still trying to get my head around that one.. that and the consolidation moves people use to drag more units into combats. You need to set up about 3-4" from your vehicles, but also keep close enough to prevent "fly" units from jumping over your guys and consolidating into the tanks. As to countering deepstrike: Scout Sentinels are really helpful in my opinion, I've been using 3 in order to fill up the requirements for the "big" detachment. Their scout move allows them to move up to 9" before the game starts, and enemies can't deepstrike within 9" of one. If you keep a few squads on the edge of your deployment zone, and scout the sentinels up (and preferably into cover) you block off most of 'no man's land'. If you only bring one or two you can atleast prevent the enemt from landing near you important stuff. Apart from sentinels I've been taking a lot of infantry squads (4-6) and heavy weapon squads (2-3) which can block off most, if not all, of your deployment zones to deepstrikers. A bubble extending 9" from three 50mm bases is a pretty big chunk of the board, and a Mortar squad costs less than 50 points (and actually contributes to the battle). The sentinels might give up first blood.. but it'll keep the rest of your army shooting for the first turn. If your opponent has a lot of deepstrikers you can always "move move move" a squad of infantry/conscripts up the board to fill the gaps a bit.

And this is why I stick to Tommorows War.
Oh, you want to close-assault? Enjoy everyone who can see you's reaction fire.

You're our resident grammissar, RT. You should know better. On the other hand, I have taken perverse delight at using my Chimeras as battering rams. Seriously considering putting dozer blades on all of them now.
