Hi everyone! After taking some time out I've decided I can actually commit to a project from start to finish. I'd love to do a French WW2 themed Imperial Guard regiment but am hesitant about which models to use? I noticed these fantastic models on Bolt Action and was thinking of mixing DKOK and some of the 28mm WWII models from Bolt Action? So... here's my question: Has anyone used Bolt Action models in 40K as proxy Guardsmen? The Russians could be a good replacement for Valhallarns and its also a cheap way to increase my single squads into platoons without spending an extortionate amount on FW... Here's a link to the company website btw: store.warlordgames.com/collections/bolt-action Any suggestions? I know they are both 28mm but would the models fit in with DKOK range?

My recollection is that they don't proxy well. The figures are proportioned differently and don't convert with 40k pieces well. That said, if you're playing with friends, go nuts!
I don't know if there's a 3rd party supplier that makes Adrian helmet heads, but check out Anvil Industry for possible Valhallan & Krieg head options. There's also a company out there that makes a KV-1/2 style turret for the Russ.

The proportions are completely wrong for mixing. While heroic in scale, they're 28mm miniatures, whereas GW figures are closer to 32mm. Even the finer Forge World pieces do not sit neatly alongside them - the scale difference is glaring.
That said, if you want to use Russians as Valhallans, it might be possible, but not using GW Sci-Fi kits. Mantic Games kits may be closer to scale, but I've never had any to hand to check.
(note to self: restart designs of geedub scale conversion pieces)

I'll second that Bolt Action and GW/FW minuatures do not really work side by side. It just looks... odd.
French army themed bits are not something that I've seen. But Russian, British, Anzac, American, and German themed bits are fairly common. Or perhaps it might be possible to get custom 3d printed headswaps somewhere.

However, Bolt Action is generally regarded as a superior system to 40K; and, having read the rulebook, I'm inclined to agree. Has anyone tried using the rules set to play 40K?

It's....not superior, per say, but better suited for a realistic or historical engagement. I love the pinning system, and I love the order dice that determine who acts, but I think outside of a Guard v. Guard or Space Marines v. Chaos Marines game, it would result in horribly unbalanced game play, due to the unique ways that 40k armies fight Could you imagine the Imperial Guard trying to act after getting hit by a few rounds of Tau gunline? It would be damn near impossible to rally them, even with several officers. Just my personal opinion, having played dozens of games of Bolt Action, and probably hundreds of games of 40k in my time

If you're still looking to make a WW2 French themed Guard army you can find Adrian helmeted heads on Anvil Industries, Mad Robot Miniatures, and West Wind Productions. The forgeworld Malcadortype tanks make good replacements for the french tank the Char 1 bis too. Big, tough, slow, and unsubtle.
