OK, Thanks. Can anyone put up a picture or a link so I can see what the first edition one looks like. Or is that the one called Rogue Trader ?

This was all before my time in the hobby, but I think that's the first "Guard" codex for Warhammer 40k. The RT era had them as the Imperial army, as I recall. I don't know if there was a specific supplement, but here's the RT rulebook in all it's 80s glory. www.scribd.com/doc/98081091/Warhammer-40K-Rogue-Trader-RulebookAround page 162 is where they discuss Imperial soldier profiles.

Cheers Reds, That's everything I need to know. Another question to the collective mind of the Guard Board. I've seen a Catachan codex which I assume is stand alone, not a guard codex supplement. And I think I saw an Elysian codex once but in a PDF form and of course the Forgeworld DKOK and Elysian supplements.
Is or was there any other regiment codex in circulation once? Valhallan or Tallarn or something ?

As you mentioned, Catachans used to be a stand alone. I want to say that was 3rd edition.
Elysians are through Forgeworld. The Taros Campaign and Raid on Kastoral Novum had their rules. Tallarans also had rules in the Taros Campaign, but that was mostly for an armored regiment. DKoK were in the Siege of Vraks books, and I think there were some additional Cadian tidbits in the Doom of Mymeara. These are all old, outdated rules, but the fluff is still good.
The other place to consider, if you can find an archive, is the old Chapter Approved stuff and the supplements they put in White Dwarf. Lots of neat stuff in there, especially around the time that the 13th Black Crusade campaign first took place. That's when plastic Cadians came out.
What are you after specifically? Fluff or rules?

Fluff. It's the fluff I want. I should have said. I'm after as much fluff as I can. Preferably as a hard copy in my hand rather than something I have to print out. But if I have to print it out that'll do. Actually, come to think of it if I scan them and print it out it'll save me having to cut up all the old codexes.
What I'm going to do with it all is put it all together and try to make a book about guard history. Of course it'll be a book without end as there will be a constant release of accounts and new campaigns so I'll end up doing it in a clip binder and just add newly released bits as and when they're released.
A long term project that I thought up to do something with all my old codexes. I was thinking about doing one for the Space Marines after that but I'll have to get the old codexes first.

If you shoot me a PM this coming weekend, I'll hook up my old PC and try to dig out PDFs of the old forgeworld books. I can also load you up with PDFs of Only War, FFG's guard-centric roleplaying game. It's out of print now, but there's tons of good stuff in there. The old Apocalypse books also had some chunks of stuff, but it was fairly minor and isn't anything you wouldn't find anywhere else.

I´m interested in the Only war pdf if you got it laying around. Not a problem. Like I said, shoot me a PM this weekend (I'm usually pretty fried by the end of the week so there's no guarantee I'd remember otherwise). Not to hijack the thread, I've got most of the 40k RPG PDFs, and since they're out of print, I'm not violating any terms of use by sharing them. If you'd like a copy of any of the following, hit me up. - Dark Heresy 1st Edition and the majority of the supplements (I don't think I have the adventures though) - Dark Heresy 2nd Edition + supplements - Rogue Trader + Supplements - Deathwatch + some supplements & adventures - Black Crusade + most supplements - Only War + most supplements and adventures RedCuffs: If you don't mind waiting a few weeks, I can see if I have the old White Dwarfs from the 13th Black Crusade era in our storage unit. I can scan any relevant pages.

That's the first codex; Second edition, but for Rogue Trader (and 3rd ed Fantasy) there were army lists in other books. It wasn't till 2nd edition 40k and 4th fantasy that you saw a book/ list for every army. The first list was Hylgar's Hellraisers in the Book of the Astromican and there was a later version in the Compendium, which added a lot of stuff from White Dwarf articles. So the second IG list had a lot more units - beastmen, rough riders, ogryns, penal legion, human bomb and whiteshields (conscripts) whereas the first one just had different types of guard squads. Second edition was when Guard got their own tanks - the chimera and leman russ, so before everyone just used land raiders, rhinos and predators.

I have it on digital PDF, so no. In fact it's impossible to get that book in physical; just try looking for it on Amazon. Whereas you can find some of the other Rogue Trader books for ridiculous prices. The one to watch out for is Slaves to Darkness, which was rumoured to be put back into print this year. I'd love to own a copy of that.. I do have the RT White Dwarf Compedium which is the later 1989 version of the IG list. However its my most prized book and I have it guarded by servitors wielding dirty crackhead needles. One of my favourite image from the book shows a typical imperial army formation with infantry (note shoulder mounted lascannons) , bikes, jetbikes, sentinels, ogryns and commissars. The Mordions.
