*to barely acceptable standards
Greetings and salutations all. Thanks to less storage and a slighty shrinking hobby fund (and the remainder being saved for Necorumnda releases and the inevitable plastic battle sisters), I'm trying to make a concerted effort this year to paint what I've got instead of getting new stuff. In order to do that, I need to seriously up my painting game. It's too easy to get discouraged and lose focus when you have to constantly paint-strip failed attempts.
To that end, I'm looking for tutorials you guys may have found helpful. Step by step guides or videos are preferred, since I'm a visual learner..
- If anyone knows a good Painting Minis 101 I'd love to see it. I need to be able to match terms (edge highlighting, etc) with what the action actually is. The only real principle I know is "Thin your paints", which I chant in a monotone mantra as I paint.
- I need help with painting flesh, badly. Sucking at it is why my Eschers aren't painted yet, and why my Skitarii are the only army I've made reasonable progress on. I'd be eternally grateful for any guides.
Thanks in advance!

I've always gone with very thin Elf Flesh, with an Ogryn Flesh wash. I'm sure that there are better ways of doing things that take into account base coating and highlights, but I'm too lazy to learn them.

I really like 'from the warp' (http://fromthewarp.blogspot.nl/p/archives-and-tutorials.html?m=1) and 'tale of painters' (http://taleofpainters.blogspot.nl/search/label/Tutorials?m=1) for tutorials that are easy to follow and fairly quick to execute.
For some advanced stuf, chest of colors has a bunch of great tutorials that I think are pretty clear to follow. (http://chestofcolors.com/tutorials/painting/) and CMON also has a bunch of great, but often very complex, tutorials.
The main thing for me (not that I'm that great a painter) is to paint new kinds of mini's.. the first time I painted a commissar I looked through a bunch of different tutorials on painting black cloth. After that it's a matter of experimenting with the different techniques and finding something that works for you.
So if you have an old fantasy miniature that you had laying around from trading bits a couple years back; paint it up for the heck of it. Spare Marine? Paint it as a Salamander, or a Howling Griffon, or some other chapter you never painted before. Essentially give yourself an opportunity to try some new techniques.

That's the plan (and thanks for the links!). I have a wad of extraneous Blood Angels and Ultras from when I culled their rosters, so they'll be my test subjects.

Painting skin is very easy. Don't water it down, and don't put it on too thick, for the first coat. You almost want to "overbrush" which is a technique like dry brushing, except you have just a little more paint on the brush.
On your second coat, then you water it down and use the brush to smooth out streaks. The watered down 2nd coat will seep into places you may have missed, and help spread everything out
Then wash with a flesh wash and you're done
I recommend a heavier, darker skin tone, and a light wash, as opposed to a very light skin tone such as Elf Flesh. Heavy washing will darken the skin and destroy the details

you care too much! (seriously, i feel much better with lots of models painted to basic level then a single model painted well)
currently my painting process is:
spray paint followed by wash followed by drybrush = done.
its not pretty but i have so little time right now!
i'm intrigued about painting skin as i've never felt comfortable with my results, so this is a good thread for me to follow!
also... i just bought a compressor and airgun as i want to make pretty eldar machines! I'll let you know what works!
