I'm participating in the Vigilus Campaign and an escalation league at my local store, and we get bonus points for providing the fluff, so I've spent some time having a think about their origins. Decided to write about the deeds that garnered the attention of the Deathwatch

Story: To Certain Death
Ajantis was recruited to the Deathwatch after a battle against the Necrons on the already awakened Tomb World of Lorn V. After a raging war between the Imperium and Chaos became more complicated due to the awakening of the living metal race of Necrons, aid was called for, and the 4th company of the Imperial Fists answered. Already a Sternguard Sergeant, Ajantis, his squad, and several tactical squads from the 4th Company made planet fall in drop pods, into the middle of a massive clash between Imperial Guard forces and the Necrons. Upon an icy plateau, the yellow clad Space Marines could see about 100 meters below them, as the surrounded Guardsmen fought for their lives against many waves of nearly indestructible xenos. In the distance, a massive, towering Monolith encroached on the battle, adding complication to an already complicated engagement. Thinking fast, Ajantis, who was acting force commander of the 40 Marines there, ordered 2 squads to remain atop the bluff and provide fire support for the Imperial Guard beneath them. A torrent of accurate bolter fire helped to stem the tide, but did little to permenantly defeat their alien foe. The other 2 squads would follow Ajantis down a slope, to a lower cliff face, where they slide perilously down the side, placing themselves between the Monolith and the Imperial Guard. A large wave of Necron warriors blocked their path, so Ajantis's men utilized Vengeance rounds to decimate them as they advanced rapidly towards the imposing vehicle. Their bolter rounds and plasma fire did little to harm it, and several Marines were killed instantly by sickly green energy weapons; they would have to think fast in order to survive.
Spotting a glowing portal upon the side of the Monolith, spouting forth more Necron warriors, Ajantis made a bolt move. He called for covering fire, and advanced alone through enemy fire, a melta bomb in hand, receiving dozens of grazing hits to his power armor in the process. After slaying several Necrons who had recently emerged, he tossed the melta bomb 30 meters and into the portal. It detonated halfway through, and rendered the Monolith innoperable. Afterwards, they made short work of the remaining Necrons, who phased out, leaving the frosty canyon eerily quiet.
Ajantis's deeds were recorded and passed on to his Chapter Master, who then several years later, recommended Ajantis for the Deathwatch tithe. He went willingly, and proudly, and has served over 60 years in the Ordo Xeno's coalition, rising to the rank of Watch Captain only recently
"We are the shield that slays, my brothers. It matters not from which Primarch you were born; together we form both the mailed fist, and the thrusting spear of the Emperor, and the Ordo Xenos!" - Watch Cpt Ajantis

Story: A Relic of Ancient Heresy
In M40, the year 998, on the edge of Imperial held space, a small warp rift opened near Watch Fortress Phalanx, and from it, emerged a ship of ancient Imperial design. Fortress Phalanx hailed the ship, but received no answer, and from the scans, it appeared that there were no human lifeforms aboard. Scanners seemed scrambled though, unable to detect anything withins its hull, and so, fearing a xeno infested space hulk, then Watch Master Arkteros assembled three kill teams in Terminator armor to board and purge it.
Once aboard, the 15 Marines spent the better part of a week exploring the dark, ominous hallways of the ship. Along with them came the Watch Master himself, and a Techmarine, whose role it was to interface with the ship's systems and determine its origin. After 4 days of searching, finding nothing, the team made their way to the stasis chambers in the bowels of the ship, where they found a most curious, and disturbing sight. Dozens of dead Space Marines, in ancient Mk 3 power armor, colored grey and emblazoned with the symbol of an ancient, and hated enemy; the Luna Wolves. Among the broken, penetrated corpses, knelt a single Astartes, clad in the same armor, wielding a still thrumming, blood soaked power sword.
At the sight of a Luna Wolf, the Deathwatch Marines were baffled, stunned even. Several of them raised their storm bolters to fire, a cry of "TRAITOR!" escaped their lips, but the Watch Master demanded they hold their fire. After several moments more, the living Luna Wolf still hadn't moved, or spoken a word. Arkteros demanded answers. The lone Marine stood, and asked what year it was. He seemed unphased by the answer, then began to tell his story. Stuck in the warp during the Great Heresy, he had slain his brothers when they turned Traitor. The Deathwatch came to learn, that for this Marine, the Horus Heresy had occurred only scant months ago, a warp storm spilling his ship adrift within the warp, and yet somehow it remained unscored by demonic incursion.
Watch Master Arkteros had possibly the most unique situation he had ever encountered, but one he would not squander. He extended the invitation to the lone Astartes to join the Deathwatch, and after explaining to him that without the Deathwatch he would most assuredly be killed on sight by other Chapters, he accepted. His name was Abdel, and soon after joining the Deathwatch, he took a vow of silence, donned his new Mk VIII power armor, and would spend the next 900 years in quiet, endless service to the Deathwatch. Hundreds of times, and across dozens of kill team assignments, Abdel has been asked about his history, never answering it even once. His brother Marines find him unsettling to be around, but his silent ferocity in battle is matched by very few
"I alone, the last surviving son of Horus the Traitor, must bear the burden of my entire Legion's betrayal. To even discuss it, wounds my soul. Henceforth, I shall speak no more" - Brother Abdel's final words to Watch Master Arkteros

Name: Kagan
Rank: Watch Sergeant
Chapter: Iron Hands
Unit: 2nd Clan
Former Role: Devastator Sergeant
Demeanor: Stern, Grim faced
---
Equipment:
- Combi Melta
- Power Fist (Power field installed in his bionic leg)
- Power Armor
- Frag & Krak Grenades
Notable Kills:
- Installed a power field, similar to those found in power fists, into his bionic leg,
used it to dislocate a Carnifex's knee cap, before killing it with a melta shot to the base
of its neck
- Disable's a Shas-O's jet back with his last bolter shell. Kicked the Shas-O off a cliff
with his power leg
- Shot off a Necron Wraith's legs, then stomped its head in with his power leg
Story: Steel Resolve
Watch Sergeant Kagan hails from the Iron Hands, a chapter that believes the flesh is weak, and thus willingly replace many body parts with enhanced bionics during their service to the Emperor. Kagan is no different than any other Iron Hands Astartes, though his second bionic replacement (the first being his left hand upon induction into the 2nd Clan) happened due to injury rather than voluntary ceremonial removal. It was in his 18th year of service with the Iron Hands, as a young scout in his late 20s, that Kagan would first prove his prowess and adaptability.
On a beleaguered Mechanicus world, overrun by Tyranids, and cut off from the rest of his Clan, he and his fellow scouts were attempting to make their way back to Imperial lines, through a xeno infested steel jungle. Around every corner there was danger, prowling Tyranid organisms directed by the hive mind to seek, destroy and consume any remaining human life forms. In the gutted and burnt remains of a mechanicus factory, Kagan and 3 other scouts attempted to sneak through a small swarm of Termigaunt creatures. Unfortunately for the young Marines, they were spotted, and a furious firefight ensued. The two forces exchanged fire briefly, the neophytes quickly and efficiently cut down the alien menace, but not before Kagan took a biological fleshboarer round to his left leg. Despite Kagan's gene seed implant and advanced physiology, the wound began to infect at an extremely rapid rate, dissolving flesh and hyper dense muscle, straight down to the bone. Ignoring the agony but unable to walk and knowing that he would likely soon die, Kagan demanded his brothers leave him behind. They did so hesitantly, but in the end they complied.
Left alone amid a war torn ruin, and likely surrounded by hostile xenos, Kagan unsheathed his knife as his squad mates fled for the safety of Imperial territory. Sawing away at his own leg at the hip, he spent the next 8 hours cutting away the wounded appendage. Once it was cut away, he used tools found within the factory to cauterize his stump, and then began to crawl. For 17 days, at a snail's pace, he crawled without food or water, keenly observing his surroundings and avoiding all xenos threats. Upon his return, he was praised by his clan for his indomintable will to live, and fitting with a bionic leg, then elevated to the rank of Tactical Marine.
Many years later and countless battles later, Kagan would end up as a Devastator, and then the sergeant of his own squad. It was during his service as a Devastator squad leader than he would engage the Tyranids again. Amid furious combat against a innumerable horde, his squad decimated and undermanned, Kagan would take up a multi-melta from a fallen brother, and with it, laid low 5 massive Tyranid creatures. Their deaths would break the tide of the threat, allowing the Imperial forces to gain the upper hand in that campaign. Soon after, Kagan was offered a place among the Deathwatch as part of the tithe. He begrudgingly accepted the honor, but soon found himself at home among his new brethren, most especially when fighting the Tyranid race. After 2 decades of service with the Deathwatch, Kagan accepted the rank of Watch Sergeant, and would lead his kill team to honor and glory time and time again.
"The flesh of the xeno, too, is weak! Mighty though the beasts may be, all die under concentrated bolter fire!" - Sgt. Kagan

There are 10 Marines in the army, and a Corvus blackstar which has a pilot and co pilot, who will also get stories.
