I'm happy to announce my boy has finally taken an interest in the hobby!! After trawling through the GW Website and Google he's decided to go blue and do the Ultramarines (he's a big Chelsea fan!!) Luckily he's not interested in painting or modelling side of the game so I get to do all that! I have decided to start a new army too. I just wasn't feeling it with Chaos and wanted a classic matchup. The intention is for the whole joint collection to have an Eastern Fringe theme. I've decided to build a Tyranid Swarm. I got a good deal on 12 Hormagaunts so I'm off and running. Long story short, I'll be building Ultramarines and Tyranids at roughly the same pace. Here's the test model for the Tyranids: Tyranid Hormagaunt Tyranid Hormagaunt Any comments would be welcomne.

I have a soft spot for Ultramarines, as they were my first 40k army back in the day (after my Undead army). I like the scheme you have gone for, simple yet not boring.
One advantage you have collecting Ultramarines and Tyranids is that you will end up with plenty of bit to customise both armies. A few shoulderpads or something on a Tyranid base and some trophies on your veteran marines, then you would really get the feeling that the two armies are tied together. For an extra step, you could wait for a really memorable moment in battle and model a trophy for it.

Thanks Trickstick!
Yeah, Ultramarines are awesome. I’m glad he picked them.
Glad you like the Nid’s colour scheme, I wanted something simple so I can blast through the chaff but complex enough for the larger gribblies!
Love the idea of keeping a project wide basing and trophies scheme. Means I can add character for both armies that’d look cool and unified! Also it’ll use up all the inevitable spares.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Boo chelsea boo...
Model look top notch though, a simple yet effective scheme that shouldnt cause too much headache painting 300 times

Thanks, it’s quite easy so I’m getting through them at a decent rate.
I have 5 more to do to finish the first brood.

Thanks guys!
I wanted to go for something natural looking.
Mainly because Vallejo Field grey is my favourite colour! I try to use it as much as possible!
Also it’ll contrast nicely with the shiny blue of the Ultramarines.
On the off chance, does anyone have any spare crests from the Space Marines Sternguard Veterans set? My son wants the Mohawk look for Sergeants and officers and I can’t find any on eBay.
Failing that does anyone know of somewhere to buy crests/plumes to fit Primaris Marines?

Thanks nutty, those are exactly what I was looking for!
I think they’ll look less pronounced on Primaris.

Finished the first squad of Intercessors! My boy was pretty pleased with them. Though I think he was hoping for every model to have the crest! (the mind of an 8 year old is a wonderful place!) I'm aiming to have the 2 forces to a playable size by the autumn. I've made 2 1000pt lists to build from. Painting the 2 armies at the same time should keep things fresh so not too much burnout. Some nice work there! Wish my kid would take up table top gaming (mainly so I could get some actual game time in!).

I'm amazed everytime you paint Space Marines just how good they turn out, I can tell you enjoyed painting these guys.
Proper 'Code Brown' if you came face to face with that Hammer.
Looking forward to seeing the next set.

Soap, it's still a work in progress, I'm hoping to be able to start playing games with him by the Autumn. Thanks MD, you're right, I really enjoy painting and especially Marines! Today's update is the Broodlord. I think my colour scheme scales up rather well. This was such a beautiful model to work on, tempted to buy another Start Collecting box just to get another one! That broodlord looks mean, and the marines also turned out really well.

Thanks nutty!
I’m currently working on the rest of the “Start Collecting” box. Can’t wait to do the Trygon, for now though it’s the Genestealers.

I really like the talons. The greenish hue is sweet! Gives them an almost diseased look while not going so far as saying nurgle (god that would be scary, nurgling nids)

Cool; the good sculpts can stand up to test of time quite well. The colours also look really good on them.

Thanks swalkerfour and nutty!
Funny you should say they look nurgle-ish, the final highlight is Nurgling Green.
Tbh the colour scheme just sort of made itself, I used my favourite colours (Rakarth flesh and Vallejo German Field grey) I tend to squeeze them into most of my projects!

What a beast! The armour plate painting is a joy to look at. I can see it now tearing up guardsmen left, right and centre.
Sub Assemblies for larger models are the way forward, easier to paint and satisfying when you bring everything togeather.
