two words: hardened veterans (but yeah, doesn't it suck that our officers are screaming 'kill me!' now? ) a command squad w/ force weapon/honorifica, commissar w/ powerfist, priest ain't bad - that's a total of 10+ wounds and 2 powerfists plus power/force weapons with room for some meltaguns in the squad too if you wanna go really crazy.

I always thought that if an IC was in a squad or within 6 inches of a squad he could nopt be targeted specifically, though if you chose to take wounds on him(Before rolling saves) then all wounds inflicted on him were on him. If he was alone but not within 6 inches of a squad he could be targeted and killed.

he's got to stay within 2" of a member of his squad at all times (or the unit counts as out of coherency). this doesn't apply in melee combat however, since an independent character with a squad (even a retinue) fighting in melee with an enemy is considered a multiple combat (the IC, and his retinue counting as separate units).
as far as being within 6" of a squad, he has to remain within 2" of his squad. if his squad is killed, then he reverts to being a standard issue independent character, meaning he has to take no last man standing checks and may join and leave other squads if he chooses to. if he is independent and not in a squad then he may not be targeted at all unless he's the nearest legal target to an enemy.
