Hi all,
I'd like to propose my theory on scenery; All scenery should be wrecks!
The reason for this is because it explains WHY your battle sof 40k are fought within such close proximity, let me explain:
Scenario 1) One army is a defender, the other the attacker, Scenario 2) Both armies want to secure an objective which lies between them,
In both these scenario's the distance between the armies is closing,
as they come into range of artillery the first casualties will begin,
then as the direct fire weapons get into range they will begin to obliterate the key targets,
primarily the transports and tanks,
the downside of engaging these targets is that the wreckage creates line of sight blocking terrain,
further transports and tanks will change course to avoid the obstructions,
these come under fire themselves thus creating more line of sight blocking terrain,
Slowly the distance between the armies is filled with burning wrecks and eventually targets are appearing at extreme short range!
There are scenarios in which this doesn't apply, for example city fights, drop pod armies, teleport armies, or any other means of deploying units within the extreme short range that 40k takes place in.
However, I love builing wrecks, so I challenge you to find the cheapest, most badly painted model on ebay, and covert it to a wreck.
(you may discover the other reason I support this point of view, building wrecks is great fun, AND you find that they are on your game table again and again and again, while your LRMBT's sit slowly gathering dust!).
I welcome comments and opposing points of view, look forward to seeing your wreckage!

The majority of 40K scenarios are meeting engagements. This suggests mobile warfare (which, given planets are huge and tanks are cheap, is a given).
Wrecked vehicles would be recovered, not left lying around. One way or another, the battle would pass over wrecked vehicles, ruins and the usual dull wrack and ruin of bog standard 40K terrain.

I like a nice tank battle with wrecks and some more natural looking terrain (rock formations, (dead/burnt) trees, etc.). But I seem to be using a lot of infantry when I'm playing 40k these days, and multi-level ruins/buildings in a cityfight set-up are more interesting when playing with infantry to me.
Also on a somewhat unrelated note; some of the most memorable 40k battles I played used 'moving terrain' I think we got the rules from a gorkamorka race scenario; you decide on a direction before the battle start, and after the end of the round everything gets moved 8" towards that board edge. If a model got taken of it would be destroyed (vehicles became wrecks and entered the terrain pool) and terrain got setup within 8" of the opposite edge. Definitely worth a try if you want to mix things up; as you really need to change the way you build and play your army.

to be honest, most the time I'm acting as referee while my son and his mate play Nids vs Blood Angels, they seem to like variety too!
Does mean I might build some Nid wrecks... trouble is all the torsos and legs get used up, hmm, ebay.

A knocked out bio titan would make an interesting Epic terrain piece
