My son has finally settled on an army for 40k! We've gone through Space Wolves, Black Legion to name a few! As I have got a playable force of Tyranids and a start to my Death Korps of Krieg it's time to put some time into my boy's Ultramarines. He's not really interested in the painting side of things so I have free reign over the artistic aspect of the force. I'm easing him into it slowly and have started the army with models he thinks are cool, which will hopefully keep his interest. With that in mind I thought I'd start him off with an HQ. I'll be using the colour scheme I used for my Horus Heresy Ultramarines. I have fond memories of those years so seemed a fitting place to begin. Ultramarines Indomitus Captain Ultramarines Indomitus Captain Ultramarines Indomitus Captain Ultramarines Indomitus Captain Ultramarines Indomitus Captain I've started this thread to gather my thoughts on this project and hope people with experience of getting their kids into 40k will offer constructive advice! Many thanks.

That's a good looking captain. Those HH Ultras were great; so a new army in those colours should be a success as well.

Thanks for the vote of confidence nutty!
He’s been obsessive about Guilliman! So you can guess what’s on the painting table!

yo, that's fantastic paint work!
how old is he?
Lots of fun to be had being creative and if you're sneaky you can fit loads of education into the process too! (literature, art, maths etc)
Look forward to seeing more!
I think I'm a little confused, is the primaris painted by you or him?
I found that to get my boy to paint the best route was a) finding the army / models he liked most b) simplifying the paint scheme to a base coat, a wash and a final touch of colour on an easily accesible location, possibly highlighted.
he went with tyranids, so they're base coated white, washed with purple, the carapace is painted black and then given a grey dry-brush.
This gave him all the neccasary techniques and his army just keeps growing!
We've been playing a series of patrol mission (25 power level) (or approx 500 points, though we haven't used points yet) games where the winning army has to stay exactly the same while the loser can choose a new force, this has lead to lots of great games and a sense of progression, trial and error and learning of tactics and the game mechanics. They're also nice and quick!
We've also got a blood bowl league on the go with 4 teams, he painted the lizardman team (since they were the closest to tyranids)..
Also consider making terraina dn painiting backdrops for your photo's etc: loads of cool projects available!

Sorry for the confusion! He’s 9 years old.
I think he’ll take an interest in painting at some point but atm he wants me to do them.
My eldest daughter is painting her own Eldar force, which I’m glad about as I have so much hobby to do it’s unreal.
We’ve got our own little gaming club on the go thanks to lockdown, getting plenty of 1500pt games in!
I think doing terrain might be a great way of getting him into painting too.
Thanks for the advice Treadiculous!

Thanks treadiculous! That’s a great compliment!
I’m having a slow start to 2021. Still working on Guilliman.
What would you guys like to see me do next?
I’ve got Artillery, Engineers and Breaching Drill or a Macharius Vanquisher? Can’t decide atm.

Like I said, it's been a slow start to 2021. Though I haven't been idol. Finished the big G! I'm really happy with how he has turned out. I thought he had so much gold I had to do the Aquila and lower face plate in white, I think it gives a little more interest. I've now roped my son and younger daughter into painting the rank and file while I'll just paint the characters, so this thread will be updated as and when I make any progress. Guilliman Guilliman Guilliman Guilliman Guilliman Next up I'll be working on some Krieg! Thanks.

Cheers Walk! I really needed to do a half decent job on it or I’d have a disappointed 9 year old on my hands!! Glad you liked it.
The next Ultramarine I’ll paint will probably be Chief Librarian Tigurius. That’s a little way off as I’d like to work on my Krieg for a bit.

After trawling through the GW Website and Google he's decided to go blue and do the Ultramarines (he's a big Chelsea fan!!) I finally finished the rebuttal to your boys ChelseaMarines... current monitor resolution

😂😂😂😂😂😂
So good! I didn’t think you’d actually do it.
Thing is it’s a nice paint job too!
I like you went old school and chose Henry, he’s probably one of the best strikers in Premier League history (even if he did play for Arsenal!!)

It had to be Henry, I grew up watching him and bergkamp, viera etc. I almost did wilshere (guys my age and played for them since I started watching at like 10 until like 2 years ago) but then I realized that I would just be doing that for me.
Also that is officially the one and only primaries marine I own or have painted.

Thanks Walk!
It’s probably the largest model I’ve ever worked on!
Was a bit daunted at first but managed to break it down into smaller processes and that helped.

that's a great primaris marine!!
I got to see Henry play when he was still at the Seagulls, His talent didn't take too long to spot!
Ace Knight there too - I must finish mine!

It’s been a while since I did anything for the Ultramarines, time to remedy that! I’ve completed Chief Librarian Tigurius. Such a sweet model, I’m really impressed with the detail GW can get into the latest plastic kits. Tigurius Tigurius Tigurius Tigurius I’ve set myself the challenge to do at least one Ultramarine every fortnight, so hopefully it won’t be too long before I update again!

Looking really solid, good to switch it around to keep the morale up. And at that pace he should have an army by the time hes a dad haha. At a model a fortnight that's what two squads a year?

Yeah you’re right, I need to be a bit more ambitious!!
I think a squad every fortnight would be better.
I’m currently working on my Tyranids as they’re the closest to completion.

He's getting a kickass army painted for free, so he'll get no sympathy from on it taking a couple of years

Thanks nutty! I don’t have as much hobby time as I’d like and have 3 projects on the go (Nids, Krieg and Ultramarines) therefore it’s difficult fitting everything in.
I think a balanced approach will be best (plus there’s only so much space on the wet pallet!!)
