Greetings,
I've been lurking around these forums for sometime now. I used to play 40K as guardsman back at the tail end of 6th edition-beginning of 7th edition. I only played casually with a few friends back then and only had 750 pts worth of Guard. With that said, looking to get back into the hobby and looking forward to sharing some pictures/fluff.
Hoping to get into campaigning and use that to build the lore of my new guardsmen I'm working on.

Always nice to get some fresh blood around here it's been getting a little quiet. I do love reading homebrew fluff so definitely lay that on us when you can.
Edit: just saw you posted fluff, I'm on it!

Greetings!
traditionally, as a newcomer you shall be given a useless weapon and sent to fight a hideous foe.
I present you with the 'hot wax strip unsightly hair remover' and order you to go defeat that Avatar of Khaine over there.
Let us know how you get on.

Congratulations on a successful mission soldier!
You achieved it with minimal casualties too.

I love Blackadder… wherever his anscestors are in the 41st Millenium, the Inquistion is probably trying to burn him at the stake for his lack of faith but can’t because Ogryn Baldrick keeps muddling it all up.

Finally got two squads worth of guardsmen put together and ready to paint. For a paint scheme I was sort of thinking like a darker green for the fatigues, butterscotch type brown for the flak armor and helmet, brown leather for the boots and webbing and black and silver for the lasguns. Anybody have any thoughts? I’m a pretty novice painter and haven’t painted any minis in over ten years.

It sounds like it'd be a decent contrast between the armour and fatigues, which is the one thing I would really recommend.
I painted my guardsmen in khaki and brown, and they sort of blend together into a brown blob whenever you look at them from a distance.. which makes sense camo-wise but it doesn't look good on the table.
As for the actual colours there's plenty of ways to make things make sense lore-wise; so you can go with any colour you want. So far I know of two bright purple guard armies, and they both look great. But the easiest way to make a colour work (IMHO) is to have enough contrast on the model to make it stand out.
Have fun painting

Oh, and since dark green is going to cover butterscotch much easier than the other way around... I'd highly recommend getting some coloured spraypaint that comes close to the butterscotch you have in mind (there's alternatives in each region that are much cheaper than GW/Armypainter and just as good) and using that to basecoat the models.
That way you only have to block in the fatigues in green (1-2 coats) instead of getting a smooth coat of butterscotch over darkgreen which will likely take 4+ coats.

That’s good advice from nutty.
I’d always recommend as small a pallet as possible. I usually use the same colour on armour, helmets and equipment, with different colour for the uniforms.
You might also want to put in a spot colour to add a little interest. I find something bright works best with muted tones.
Good luck and please post some pics of your progress if you want some more critique.
